Joseph Gordon-Levitt has signed on for his next film Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, the noir drama that Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller will be directing based on Frank Miller’s hit graphic novel.
Deadline exclusively broke the news earlier and went on to say, “I’m told that Gordon-Levitt will play the role of Johnny, a part that the filmmakers originally offered to Johnny Depp. He’s one of the core characters in overlapping story lines that feature returning players like Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen, Bruce Willis, Rosario Dawson, along with newcomers that include Dennis Haysbert. Other tough guy actors will be added, with Gangster Squad‘s Josh Brolin among the potential names I’ve heard.”
They’ve also confirmed that Gordon-Levitt won’t be involved in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and that Sin City’s sequel has already begun shooting. In addition to Sin City 2, Gordon-Levitt is also gearing up to premiere his directorial debut, Don Jon’s Addiction, at the Sundance film festival later this month in Park City. Taking this into account, it’s pretty clear why he turned down Guardians of the Galaxy, which will most likely turn to other rumored actors for the role, such as Joel Edgerton, Lee Pace, Jim Sturgess and Eddie Redmayne.
From the official press release:
Gordon-Levitt will play “Johnny,” a cocky gambler who disguises a darker mission to destroy his most foul enemy at his best game.
“Johnny is a new character in the Sin City world and we are excited for what Joseph will bring to the role,” said Rodriguez and Miller.
While filming began in October, Gordon-Levitt was able to join production so late because the film is largely done on green screen, making it easier to have actors perform at separate times. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is currently set for an October 4, 2013 release in 3D.
