Joseph Gordon-Levitt is set to star and direct in Batman vs. Superman writer David S. Goyer’s Sandman adaptation.
We reported a rumor a few weeks back that Neil Gaiman’s Sandman comic was being pitched to Warner Bros. by Man of Steel writer David S. Goyer. Now it seems the film is in motion and Gordon-Levitt will star and direct the film.
When we first reported the rumor, Warner Bros. was reportedly “very receptive” to the idea, especially with Gordon-Levitt in the lead role. He will be playing the character Morpheus and the film would be loosely based on the comic, which was launched back in 1989. Deadline reports that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is expected to direct and star in the film.
Man of Steel writer David S. Goyer has already written a treatment. JGL made his directorial debut earlier this year with Don Jon, co-starring with Scarlett Johansson.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt has now confirmed his involvement in the Sandman adaptation through the tweet seen below:
Ladies and gentlemen, I'm incredibly honored to be working with David Goyer, Warner Bros, and @neilhimself on SANDMAN. #Prelude

Sandman certainly has its own unique style and may be a difficult film to successfully adapt. While Goyer has had success in recent years, he’s not always critically appreciated. He’s currently working on Batman vs. Superman with director Zack Snyder.
We’ll be following this closely, as the writer and actor are pretty much at the top of their game, and we think they certainly have the potential to create an interesting DC adaptation.
More than anything, we’re excited to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt getting another directing job, and with Warner Bros. no less.
