Actress and comedian Joan Rivers died in New York City on Thursday following complications from a throat surgery a week ago.
Rivers was having a surgery on her vocal chords when she stopped breathing and suffered cardiac and respiratory arrest last Thursday. She was then placed on life support by the family.
News of Rivers’ death was announced by her family via a statement to the media.
Said Rivers’ daughter Melissa, “Cooper and I have found ourselves humbled by the outpouring of love, support, and prayers we have received from around the world. They have been heard and appreciated.
“My mother’s greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon.”
Rivers maintained a busy career up until the last days of her life. She hosted a new episode of Fashion Police early last week during which she discussed the fashion at the Emmys and MTV Video Music Awards. She also hosted a regular web series called “In Bed With Joan” over the past year.
Watch this segment from her final episode of Fashion Police from late August. As usual, Joan is fast and funny during her final E! appearance:
The comedian faced some criticism over the years but was always admired for her sense of humor and busy work ethic.
Rivers got her start as a guest on Johnny Carson’s The Tonight Show in 1965.
