Some shocking news to start your weekend: One entertainment site is reporting Gary Ross has formally notified Lionsgate/Summit that he won’t return to direct Catching Fire.

IndieWire reports:

The Playlist has learned that Gary Ross has officially exited the franchise and will not direct the sequel, formally giving Lionsgate and Summit his notice earlier this week, that he will not be coming back.

We had told you earlier this week that while negotiations were “tense,” insiders believed he would likely return.

Ross had also recently spoken at length about his ideas for Catching Fire, again suggesting good news.

Lionsgate has not yet commented on the news, so we’ll update you if/when an official announcement is made.
