Despite committing murder and covering it up last season on How to Get Away with Murder, we still find ourselves pulling for the interns at Keating and Associates. Here’s a few reasons why.
Whether you love or hate the true lawyers, Annalise, Frank and Bonnie, it’s pretty hard to hate Wes, Michaela, Laurel, Connor, and Asher, otherwise known as the Keating Five. They’ve even managed to kill a man and cover it up without losing our loyalty. That is surely saying something. We couldn’t help but take a look at why exactly we continue to pull for these people, despite them being not so innocent.
Wes Gibbins
1. He was always trying to do right by Rebecca.
No matter who he was up against, Wes seemed to always be trying to do right by his neighbor, and then eventually, his girlfriend. Even when he suspected Rebecca of being the killer, he still went out of his way to try and prove her guilt, something that cost him dearly in the long run.
2. He seems the least able to simply forgive Annalise for wronging him.
Case in point: He didn’t act like everything was all hunky dory at the beginning of the season. He was pissed at Annalise for keeping secrets from him about Rebecca and he let her know it too. While we love Annalise, we think it’s good to have some people around to hold her accountable.
3. He wants to get to the truth most of all.
Wes’ quest for the truth never seems to waver. Even when he discovers a truth he might not want to know, or someone lies to him and puts him off track, he still continues to persevere toward his goal of figuring out what happened. We don’t know how this quest for truth might get him involved in the Annalise shooting we’ve been seeing over the last few episodes, but it has to be related somehow.
Michaela Pratt
1. Her guilty conscience
Michaela’s gut was giving her more trouble in the wake of Sam’s death last season than anyone. She was panicking before Laurel stole her ring and even more after she believed she could be implicated, she was more affected by the guilt of what they had all done that night than anything.
2. Her pathetic love life
Since her fiance turned out to be gay, Michaela has had quite the dry spell. Until quite recently, we hadn’t even seen her be more than passingly interested in anyone. Now that she has her eyes on someone, of course it has to be a guy that secretly is tied to all the craziness of her life that was last season.
3. Her ability to get the job done
When Annalise needs something done, she knows she can count on Michaela to stay focused. While Wes, Laurel, Connor, and Asher are fooling around or are more focused on personal matters than on the case at hand, Michaela has a unique ability to zone in and work until she finds what they need the most.
Laurel Castillo
1. She can stand her ground
No matter who she may be up against, when Laurel needs to stand her ground, she sure does know how to dig in her heels. Her stubbornness and ability to keep working despite even the most seemingly immovable obstacles makes her someone we love to watch.
2. She goes after what she wants
Laurel doesn’t take any prisoners. When she knows what she wants, she goes for it. It worked with Frank, and it worked when she needed Michaela to keep quiet.
3. She makes Frank seem human.
After seeing that Frank was responsible for Lila’s death at the end of How to Get Away with Murder season 1, it was easy to dismiss him as nothing more than a killer for hire. Laurel’s relationship with Frank is what keeps him from being a two-dimensional character. If it weren’t for her, the mystery surrounding Frank wouldn’t be nearly as intriguing.
Connor Walsh
1. Oliver!
Connor’s relationship with Oliver has been an easy way for the How to Get Away with Murder fandom to give the playboy a chance. Watching him settle down and truly fall for a guy like Oliver has been a pleasure to see. Their relationship is special and we are all cheering for them to make it work long term. Coliver forever!
2. His snark.
When you need a one liner delivered, there are few characters on How to Get Away with Murder as reliable as Connor. He speaks them with as much sincerity and honesty as anyone we’ve ever seen. Things just wouldn’t be the same without Connor around to give everyone hell for their mistakes.
3. The flirting. Oh, yes, the flirting.
So, Connor may be in a committed relationship, but during his playboy days, and on the occasion that a cute witness or client is being tight-lipped about something, his flirt game was on point. Watching the boy flirt is pure magic and it goes a long way to mending any wounds caused by his role in the Sam-murder-drama from last season.
Asher Millstone
1. THE DANCING
It may not happen often, but when we get a chance to see Asher Millstone break it down, even for just a few moments, it quickly becomes the highlight of our day. How can you possibly not forgive him for just about anything when you see those hot moves on the dancefloor… or in the office.
2. The jokes
The jokes aren’t always good, but as Asher was the only one of the Keating Five not to be involved in Sam’s murder last year, it doesn’t take nearly as much to convince us to love him as it does the others. Asher brings levity to just about any situation, and we adore him for it.
3. For making everything a competition
Asher’s need to win is one of his more irritating characteristics for the other characters on How to Get Away with Murder, but he keeps things lively no matter what case they’re battling. Never a dull moment when Asher is trying his damnedest to make sure he wins.
