Homeland season 3, episode 10 “Good Night” saw the CIA’s mission to get Brody into Iran play out – but not without hiccups and luck.
The episode began with Quinn confronting Carrie on her secret that she’s pregnant. It’s in this moment she reveals to the audience that the baby is not Brody’s. At least, that’s what she tells Quinn. He believes she shouldn’t be involved with calling the shots because all she wants to do is keep Brody alive.
In Iraq, Brody is dining on some medium rare goat before the big mission begins. Their goal is just to get Brody across the Iraq border into Iran. Sounds simple right?
Everyone’s nervous going into the mission, and throughout the episode those nerves are for good reason because almost nothing goes as planned. Not even Saul’s lucky gum and Carrie’s nail biting can make things easier.
The mission starts off on the wrong foot because of a drone issue and cars sitting at the border. They decide to cross at a different entry point, but local cops arrive before the new plan is confirmed by Langley. The cops make eye contact with Brody, but his team runs the “Good Night” attack. That is…they kill everyone instantly. This shakes Brody, who tries to run away, but one of the guys gives him a heavy handed pep talk.
Driving to the new entry point, Brody’s truck crosses over a mine or IED. The truck is destroyed, but the two men inside are alive. Brody’s partner loses a lot of blood and the other guys on the mission pull up to save the injured man.
More Iraqi police arrive, but the United States can’t escalate this fight by attacking back. Saul is advised by a General to abort the mission and they decide to do so. However, Brody refuses to leave and even Carrie can’t convince him to fall back. He tells Carrie to help get him out of Iran once the mission is complete. Carrie is livid about this request.
Brody makes a run for it across the border and immediately faces Iranian police. He tells them that he is Nicholas Brody and is an enemy of the United States. They take him in, thus putting Saul’s master plan back on track. Carrie relays the info back to Saul who’s now, in her words, “still in the game.”
Now they need a new plan to get Brody out of the country once the mission is complete. Carrie visits Fara, the CIA agent who left a couple episodes ago. She has an uncle in Tehran, and Carrie is about to ask to use his home as a safe house when Fara stops her from even suggesting the idea. Carrie ends up convincing her when she reminds Fara that they have someone in mortal danger who needs to get out alive.
At the end of the episode Javadi comes into Brody’s holding cell to escort him to Tehran, the capital of Iran where the Head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard – the man Brody needs to kill – resides. The man Brody was captured with is shot point blank by Javadi, thus leaving Brody completely on his own (save for his secret partner).
This Homeland season 3 episode was a CIA mission start to finish, and we believe the show is at its best when operations are playing out. Next week’s episode will continue to show high stakes as Brody attempts to kill Javadi’s boss.
