HBO announced today The Leftovers will continue to haunt your screens for a second season.
The show may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but The Leftovers has caught onto something that viewers cannot shake. HBO’s summer drama, currently airing Sunday nights at 10:00 p.m., will continue beyond its ten episode season 1 run.
Michael Lombardo, president of HBO Programming, had this to say of the show:
“We are thrilled to bring back ‘The Leftovers’ for a second season with the exceptional talents of Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta. It has been truly exciting to see the overwhelming response to their provocative and original storytelling. We look forward to continuing the journey as the show delves deeper into the lives of those who remain.”
The show surveys the town of Mapleton, NY following the sudden departure of 3% of the world’s population. Instead of looking for answers to explain the disappearance, The Leftovers chronicles the lives of those left behind three years after the event. Families are torn apart by cults, calls to a higher power, loss of sanity, and duty to maintain a semblance of order.
The first season of The Leftovers has done the work to show viewers the darker sides of loss and grief. The character centric episodes narrow the lens, focusing on two plights of desperation and the hardship of maintaining normalcy in the face of a society bent of tearing them apart.
The cast, including, Justin Theroux, Amy Brenneman, Christopher Eccleston, and especially Ann Dowd, leave you slightly uncomfortable, but satisfied with the creation they bring to life from the combined efforts of Damon Lindelof and author, Tom Perrotta.
The finale of the show is currently set to air on Sunday, September 7.
