Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ director Rupert Wyatt has signed on to direct Channing Tatum in the X-Men spinoff Gambit.
It’s been a long time in the making, but it looks like Gambit finally has a director. Wyatt is a solid choice, who recently directed Mark Wahlberg in The Gambler, which is relevant considering Gambit is known for his role in the gambling world.
The studio officially attached Tatum to the role late last year, and it was revealed that he would also be producing the film with his production partner Reid Carolin, along with Lauren Donner and Simon Kinberg.
Channing Tatum has been extremely excited about potentially playing the mutant from down south. Tatum told MTV back in May, “I met with Lauren Shuler Donner. I would love — Gambit’s my really only X-Men that I’ve ever loved. I [mean] I’ve loved them all, they’re all great, [but] I don’t know I guess just being from down south — my dad’s from Louisiana and I’m from Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida — I don’t know I just related to him.”
The 22 Jump Street star wanted Gambit to join the ranks of other X-Men if Fox was willing, and now the Gambit solo film will be released October 7, 2016.
While some fans have been skeptical of the actor playing Gambit, as Taylor Kitsch played him in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, we think he and Rupert Wyatt will do an excellent job.
