In a new Noble Intentions installment, Fringe‘s John Noble looks back on the season 5 premiere episode and discusses Walter’s motivations.
In the video, Noble recalls the events of 4×19, in which Walter had missing pieces of his brain re-introduced. When in the season 5 premiere he is tortured by the Observer, his brain is essentially re-fried, so he is once again missing important memories.
And, as Noble explains, without Walter remembering, there is no way that they can actually succeed in their mission to take the earth back from the Observers. “Walter has to remember,” he says. He likens the flashes between lucidity and childlike silliness to the difference between Walter and Walternate, and describes it as both interesting and difficult to play as an actor.
Talking about the end of the episode in which Walter follows the reflection and finds the flower, Noble says, “It appears that Walter has basically been defeated, and then he is given a glimpse of hope. A beautiful moment of hope.” And, as he says, “without hope it doesn’t matter how technologically advanced we are.”
