We got our first look at Brie Larson suited up as Captain Marvel, and to be honest, it’s not quite what we expected.
The details of the first female-led MCU film has been kept under lock and key for quite some time now, but Page Six recently released photos from the set of Captain Marvel that showed Brie Larson suited up as the titular hero. And while many superhero uniforms evolve a bit in the transition from comic to big screen, this outfit was definitely not what we expected.

Most of us associate Captain Marvel with her iconic red, blue, and gold suit. Since the MCU gave another boldly-colored superhero, Captain America, a suit that was reminiscent to his comic book counterpart, we were all expecting our first look at Carol Danvers suited up to feature her iconic color scheme as well. So why are they making such a sharp turn away from her well-known look?
Obviously, Marvel and Larson haven’t come out to comment at all, but there are a few things to remember about the film. First, Captain Marvel is to be set in the ’90s (and the way that Brie Larson is rocking “The Rachel” haircut, I think we’re safe to assume this is definitely a scene taking place in that era).
The second thing to remember is the color scheme of Captain Marvel’s original, Kree-issued uniform. With the film taking place in the ’90s, this look could be from Carol Danvers’ early years as Captain Marvel, and will not be her final suit. Here’s a glimpse into her Kree look from the comics:

The MCU has been pretty good about keeping their hero’s uniforms close to their comic book counterpart. With Carol’s Kree backstory, this suit does make canonical sense even if it was surprising at first glance. Of course, this is all wild speculation at this point, so we’ll just have to wait and see what official images Marvel releases as we get closer to the March 2019 release date of the Captain Marvel film.
