Empire season 2, episode 3, “Fires of Heaven,” just aired. Read on to find out what hits were on fire!
Empire’s roller coaster
Lucious is now out of prison but not allowed to step foot into Empire due to the court’s orders. One of his first orders of business is getting Anika on his side to spy on Lyon Dynasty to bring them down. Anika agrees…so we think.
Lyon Dynasty
Cookie and Hakeem arrive at Sway’s radio show and Hakeem “blows us away” with his new single “Bout 2 Blow.” He’s really coming out of his shell, musically. When Sway asks Hakeem about Lucious, they end up calling him live on the air. Lucious calls Hakeem out saying he has “growing up to do.”
Anika stops by later to tell Cookie about Lucious’ plan. She says she truly wants Lucious to pay for all he’s done so she’ll be a double agent.
Freda (Bre-Z)
Jamal is at Empire when Freda and her boys show up. We met Freda last week when she was visiting her (late) father Frank Gathers (Chris Rock). Jamal calls Lucious and he tells Jamal to sign her now: “She means everything to me musically.” That can’t feel too good for Jamal to hear him say that. When Jamal and Becky present Freda with the contract, her boys aren’t liking what they’re seeing, so they leave.
Lucious’ lawyer Thirsty finds her location and they head out to get her. She’s in a rap battle when her opponent talks crap about her father. When she goes to draw her gun, Lucious grabs her and begs her to reconsider her options. She ends up fleeing. We hope she changes her mind and signs with Empire later in the season.
Ménage a Trois
While on Sway’s show, Hakeem promises to bring Ménage a Trois to Sway later in the week for an exclusive performance, much to Cookie’s dismay.
Ménage a Trois get working on “Do It” in the studio. Valentina is feeling neglected by Hakeem and starts acting out a few times. Cookie thinks it’s because she and Hakeem are sleeping together and she thinks she can run things, but Hakeem calms Valentina down and gets her working on the music and dancing. Turns out Cookie learned choreography in prison — and she’s pretty good at it!
Back at Sway’s, the other two girls in the group, Cookie and Hakeem are waiting for Valentina. Lucious then walks in and says it’s all over. He owns all radio and they have no chance. Just then Valentina walks in and Lucious breaks the news that she just signed with Empire. She then heads in with Sway and proceeds to perform her new song, “New New.”
Welcome to the World Party
Lucious throws a huge party… for himself. He has Jamal and Pitbull (Mr. Worldwide) perform their hit “No Doubt About It,” which is amazing.
Just as “No Doubt About It” is getting hype, the lights shut off. Cookie walks up, microphone in hand, welcoming Lucious home and welcoming everyone to HER Welcome to the World Party.
Yeah, she did that.
She then presents Hakeem from Lyon Dynasty — their #1 artist.
Hakeem walks out and absolutely kills it! Not only that, but he has the one and only Timbaland featured on the hit and performing with him. “Dynasty” just may be the best single yet this season. “Snitch Bitch” has some competition… especially with the looks on Jamal and Lucious’ faces. Even Pitbull was impressed!
Family drama
Lucious hosts a family dinner the night he gets out of jail. He tells everyone he’s giving them “one last chance,” but no one believes anything he says. Dinner ends when Cookie pulls the tablecloth off the table with all the food still on it.
Andre is still in desperate need of returning to Empire, but Lucious keeps telling him to pray on it. That’s still a low-blow, Lucious. Even after Andre tells him about a deal to purchase multiple radio stations and revealing Rhonda’s pregnancy, Lucious isn’t budging.
Jamal feels neglected by Lucious since he’s been out of prison. He hasn’t approved any of the producers that Lucious has sent his way and Jamal’s assistant Becky tells him that he needs Cookie. Lucious catches Jamal on his way to see Cookie and tells him that a “God” needs to produce him… he’ll produce him. Cue everyone’s eyeroll now.
