Actor/director Elizabeth Banks has signed on to play the villain in Lionsgate’s movie adaptation of the incredibly popular ’90s television show Power Rangers.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Elizabeth Banks has joined the Power Rangers movie, set to hit theaters in 2017, and just after the actress herself confirmed the news via her official Twitter account.
Elizabeth Banks reveals that she’ll be playing Rita Repulsa, who is an alien witch from the original TV show. She seems very excited about the role and the fact that she gets a chance to actually take a new movie role since her schedule has been so crazy in the last few years.

She’s been insanely busy lately, with Pitch Perfect 2 and finishing up her role as Effie Trinket in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 this past year. It feels like she’s been behind the camera a lot, so it’ll be interesting to see her in a pivotal role in the Power Rangers movie adaptation.
Lionsgate has set Power Rangers to be released on March 24, 2017.
Dean Israelite, who directed Project Almanac, will direct Power Rangers, with Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama writing the script. Alli Shearmur is the film’s executive producer, with Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey producing.
Power Rangers’ official synopsis: “From a story by Executive Producer Roberto Orci and screenwriters Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller comes a modern reinvention of the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, a group of ordinary high school kids who find themselves infused with extraterrestrial powers and must harness those powers as a team to save the world.”
