PBS has released a clip from Downton Abbey season 4, episode 5, which will air this Sunday, and it depicts one of the episode’s most heartfelt moments.
In it, Tom, Mary, and Isobel are sitting in the nursery talking about the role of Matthew’s mother with the children. Isobel also asks about Lord Gillingham’s recently announced engagement, and Mary says she’s okay with it because she’s not ready to be happy yet in light of Matthew’s death. “I’m not unhappy. I’m just quite not ready to be happy,” she says.
Isobel responds, “When I got engaged, I was so in love with Reginald, I felt sick. I was sick with love, literally,” she says with a laugh.
The three characters then discuss their first feelings for their respective loved ones, and Isobel asks them after an uplifting moment of recollection, “Aren’t we the lucky ones?”

It looks like Lady Mary has made nice progress since the death of Matthew. Isobel also seems in better spirits, and ready to accept seeing Mary with a new loved one after the loss of her son.
Downton Abbey airs Sunday, February 2 at 9 p.m. eastern/pacific on PBS. The episode will be available to watch online the next day. The synopsis for the episode reads, “A birthday party is planned for Robert, but Rose’s surprise contribution to the event ruffles feathers above and below stairs. A new farming venture on the Downton estate comes with dramatic repercussions for Mary, and Edith receives more unwelcome news.”
