Television legend Bob Newhart has won his first Emmy Award for his work on The Big Bang Theory, and has announced that he will guest star again on the geeky comedy.
Though his work in television has spanned more than 50 years, actor Bob Newhart took home his first Emmy Award last night at the Creative Arts Emmys. Newhart was awarded the Emmy for his guest starring role on The Big Bang Theory last season.
In the episode “The Proton Resurgence,” Newhart played Professor Proton, a retired scientist whose children’s TV show had a big impact on Leonard and Sheldon as kids. Sheldon hired the professor to perform for them, and got a bit carried at having the older man in his life.
Newhart admitted that for many years, he had stopped submitting his name for Emmy consideration. “I just felt that the kind of stuff I do doesn’t win awards,” he said. “And I didn’t really want to go through the process and the disappointment… That way I could sit at home and say, ‘I would have won.'”
Still, the best part of the evening wasn’t the win itself, Newhart said; instead, it was the response from his peers in the audience. “The standing ovation tonight really threw me,” he admitted. “I was totally unprepared for that.”
Fans of Professor Proton can also look forward to seeing more of Newhart in The Big Bang Theory season 7. “There’s a script I’ll be doing in October,” Newhart mentioned at the Emmys – though whether the venerable professor would still be practicing science remained a question. “He might have given up his science thing,” Newhart teased. “That’s up to Chuck [Lorre] and the writing team.”
The first two episodes of The Big Bang Theory season 7, “The Hofstadter Insufficiency” and “The Deception Verification,” will air in an hour-long block on Sept. 26 at 8pm on CBS.
