Desperate to know what our agents have been up to? Here are five haunting hints for the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4 premiere!
The premiere episode, titled “The Ghost,” introduces Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in its new 10:00 p.m. timeslot. The episode brings the thrills and the chills — and quite a few shocking twists. Make sure to check out our rhyming recap of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3 before diving into our hints for tonight’s episode!
S.H.I.E.L.D. is in pieces
Captain America isn’t the only one allowed to use that metaphor! The S.H.I.E.L.D. we return to in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4 premiere may look more or less unchanged, but don’t let appearances deceive you. The once-cozy base is now filled with unfamiliar faces, labyrinthine new protocols are the norm, and our core team has been systematically divided.
And all that change has taken a visible toll. Missing friends are the least of it; more pressingly, not everyone we know and love agrees on how to handle this change. Despite good intentions, certain characters (who once got along quite well) now find themselves in a conflict that’s going to take more than a Steve Rogers cell phone to resolve.
Robbie Reyes: Man of mystery
We should have seen this coming! In typical Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fashion, “The Ghost” plays coy with its hottest new asset. (See what we did there?) The Powers That Be know we want a good look at the workings of Ghost Rider and his alter-ego, so naturally, both remain somewhat shrouded in shadow.
Of course, we could hardly hope that the secrets of Ghost Rider would be disclosed so early, but even Robbie Reyes remains mysterious, though he and Daisy do cross, to some illumination, on their dark paths. Oh, we get a hint or two as to what Robbie’s about — but the premiere definitely leaves us fired up for more.
The Daisy chain
Unlike Robbie Reyes, Daisy is surprisingly transparent in “The Ghost.” Currently a wanted woman by both normal law enforcement and S.H.I.E.L.D., she serves as the link between almost all of the storylines animating the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4 premiere (and not always in a good way). Everyone wants her, and no one (well, almost no one) can have her.
But even more importantly, the episode poignantly clarifies exactly what is driving our once-optimistic Inhuman. Let’s just say that there’s more than one bloody chunk of emotion left over from last season that remains un-digested in Daisy’s head. If that sounds gross, well, feelings are messy… and so is the premiere.
AIDA is OMG
The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4 premiere is pretty bare-faced (and bare… other things) in its introduction of Radcliffe’s new, ah, project. Mallory Jensen doesn’t have a ton to do just yet, but the Galavant actress is unnervingly good at playing a manufactured human, cutting to the core of exactly what AIDA is: A seemingly-innocent story bomb, just waiting to explode.
Hour of terror
Okay, that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but “The Ghost” really might be one of the creepiest Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episodes we’ve yet seen. Ghost Rider provides his share of the scares, but the premiere doesn’t rely on the Spirit of Vengeance. Instead, we’re treated to a whole new angle that, well, shows us a few things we just didn’t see coming.
The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4 premiere, “The Ghost,” airs tonight at 10:00 p.m. ET on ABC.
