Powers Boothe has joined the cast of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3 in a role that may have ties to The Avengers.
According to Marvel, Boothe will play Gideon Malick, a mysterious man who arrives on the scene with significant (though currently non-specific) notoriety. Little else is known about the character as of yet, but it’s clear that Malick will become a force to be reckoned with.
“Gideon is incredibly menacing,” says Executive Producer Jeph Loeb, offering a possible clue to the character’s future. “In him we have a character that even the stone-cold Grant Ward would fear.”
“Only someone of Powers’ caliber could deliver the type of ominous and powerful performance we needed,” Loeb adds.

Interestingly, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3 will not represent Powers Boothe’s first foray into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Boothe originally appeared as an unnamed member of the World Security Council in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, though he did not reprise the role in the WSC’s later appearances.
Marvel doesn’t often re-use actors who have already appeared in their properties, though it has happened. Enver Gjokaj, for example, played a small role as a police officer in The Avengers, and then joined the main cast of Agent Carter as Daniel Sousa. It’s anyone’s guess whether or not Boothe’s original character will now be fleshed out on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3, or if Malick is someone entirely new.
Powers Boothe is known for his roles on 24, 24: Redemption, and Nashville. He also appeared in Sin City, and voiced Lex Luthor in the animated film Superman: Brainiac Attacks.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3, episode 4, “Devils You Know,” airs on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 9:00 p.m. on ABC.
