Last night on Gotham season 1, episode 9, “Harvey Dent,” fans were introduced to the ambitious young ADA Harvey Dent.
Montoya and Allen introduced Gordon to Harvey Dent in the hopes that he can help close the Wayne murder case.
Dent has an agenda of his own. He wants to bring the corrupt businessman Dick Lovecraft. He believes that Lovecraft has been working with Falcone, Maroni, and even the Wayne’s before their murder. But when he met opposition from the Wayne’s he became interested in having them removed.
So Dent proposes to scare Lovecraft by telling him that they have a witness. But what actually goes down in Dent’s office is more than meets the eye. It’s clear that Dent is frustrated with not being able to pin down Lovecraft for so long. So when Lovecraft threatens him, Dent goes off.
“I will rip you open!” Dent growls in Lovecraft’s face as he gives us the first glimpse of what he could become with Two-Face. It creeps us out, and it definitely creeps Lovecraft out. Then in a flash he’s back to the calm exterior of Harvey Dent.
Nicholas D’Agosto, who plays Harvey Dent, spoke about this moment with us saying, “This guy is really to the point of being almost a little reckless, and he puts himself in a position where he puts a lot on the line. Some of the things that come out of that foreshadow who he will eventually be, the potential that he has to become Two-Face later. “
Even though Dent didn’t get exactly what he wanted from the meeting with Lovecraft, such as a confession, he was confident in the results. He reported back to Gordon that Lovecraft was worried about the witness. And promised not to make any moves without talking to Gordon first.
Fans will have to wait and see if Dent keeps his word. But it’s safe to say that Two-Face is just below the surface. Which could mean that he unintentionally makes a decision that doesn’t benefit Gordon.
One thing that D’Agosto pointed out what that Dent was subjected to an abusive childhood which was where his capacity to become Two-Face began. D’Agosto explained, “He has the potential to have such a visceral response to when he’s threatened or when he sees someone that he thinks is also abusive.” But added that Dent also has the ability to be really rational. Hence the split personalities.
Harvey Dent will be back on the next episode of Gotham entitled “Lovecraft” to air Nov. 24 at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.
