Last night saw big steps for Gordon, Bruce, and Mooney on last nights episode of Gotham season 1, episode 8, “The Mask.”
Everyone’s got their own plan in mind on Gotham and Mooney’s is really starting to take shape. Now that she has Liza comfortable at Falcone’s house, she’s ready to make a step towards his downfall. So she instructs Liza to drug Falcone and copy his ledger.
However, it seems like Mooney’s hold on Liza isn’t as strong as she would like. Liza seems to have started to have some sort of feelings for Falcone. And she also worries about being caught. It isn’t until Mooney tells her a story of how one of Falcone’s men killed her mother that Liza complies with handing over the ledger.
The question is, what is Mooney going to do with the ledger? Hand it over to the police to use against him? More likely she will use it to help turn others against him. If she destroys part of his business it will take away some of his power. Which is what Mooney is after.
What Mooney doesn’t know is that Penguin is working to shut her down. And now he knows that she has someone close to Falcone. We’re guessing that he will keep that secret to himself until he can figure out who it is. If Penguin can get rid of the problem himself he looks even better in Falcone’s eyes. It doesn’t seem like it would be all that hard to figure out that Liza isn’t there of her own will.
Another big step in the episode was from Bruce Wayne. After the death of his parents he took time off from school. But now he’s back, and he’s caught the eye of a bully. It’s clear that Bruce is above his peers in maturity but he’s also a bit on the small side. That didn’t stop him from taking a shot at the bully when he started talking disrespectfully of Bruce’s mother.
But alas, Bruce wasn’t able to defend himself properly. Alfred stepped in and showed Bruce how to use a weapon (in this case a watch) to help him fight.
It was the first time Bruce:
A) Really got to fight someone and have a chance at winning.
B) Took justice into his own hands.
Even though it’s a relatively small step in his journey to becoming Batman, it’s a step in the right direction. From here on out we can expect to see him training to build up that muscle and learn how to defend himself, and Gotham.
After being somewhat pardoned by Falcone, Gordon has a decision to make about how he wanted his role in Gotham to be. Everyone is pushing for him to follow the program along with the rest of the GCPD and cater to the mob. But Gordon decided that he’s not going to back down.
We’re not really sure what his plan is from here on out. Though it is clear that he hasn’t stopped the goal of destroying the mob’s hold over the city. And he’s starting with the GCPD by reporting some shady criminals that have deals with the cops. Even though that means pissing off some of his co-workers.
However, Gordon doesn’t know that Barbara has left him. In our opinion this could actually make him stronger. For one thing, he won’t have to worry about someone hurting her. And for another, she won’t always be bothering him about being included in what’s going on. As long as he doesn’t get emotional about her absence.
