How We Hype is a twice-monthly feature on Hypable where we tell you what we’re doing in fandom over the weekend!
Listening to Stereo Chemistry’s new EP, ‘World Full of Giants’ – Pamela Gocobachi
Stereo Chemistry‘s debut EP hit the Internet last week and I’ve pretty much had it on repeat since. Hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area, this alt-rock indie duo cites Coldplay, John Mayer, Ed Sheeran and Jack’s Mannequin frontman, Andrew McMahon among their biggest musical influences. I’m particularly a fan of their low tempo track “You Vs Me” — one listen and I guarantee you’ll have those oh-oh-oh’s in the bridge stuck in your head for days. Currently, you can download Stereo Chemistry’s entire eight-track EP online for free, so why not go and check it out?
Attending the ‘Once Upon a Time’ premiere – Tariq Kyle
This weekend I’ll be headed to Los Angeles to cover the premiere of Once Upon a Time‘s fourth season. With Anna and Elsa on their way things are going to get interesting, and we’ll be sure to give you the extra scoop once we see the episode!
Television Finale Marathon – Brittany Lovely
Why does Sheldon leave home again? Olivia Pope’s mom did what? Wait. How many people are actually still on Grey’s Anatomy? These are all questions I hope to have answers to by the close of Sunday evening. As fall television premieres pick up next week, I need to brush off the layer of SPF 50 that is clouding my ability to remember all the way back to late May. On the docket are The Big Bang Theory, the final two episodes of Scandal (because we all know the penultimate episode was better than the finale), the Grey’s Anatomy finale, and, time permitting, the three part season finale of Elementary (which does not return for another month, but I am anxiously awaiting it.) I plan to end my viewing marathon with ABC’s airing of Once Upon a Time’s season 3 finale at 8:00 p.m.
Reading ‘Lola and the Boy Next Door’ – Kristen Kranz
So many books, so little time, but when you FINALLY get your hands on Lola and the Boy Next Door from your library, you set aside the time and read it. This weekend I will be submersing myself in Lola’s world and won’t be surfacing until I know how it ends. After finishing Anna and the French Kiss more than three weeks ago, I’m anxious to dive back into Stephanie Perkins’ writing and see if she manages to top the near perfection that was Etienne St. Clair, the American boy with a British accent in Paris. That’s a high standard to meet, my friend. Hopefully my wait for Isla and the Happily Ever After won’t feel nearly as long, but I’m not holding my breath or anything.
Listening to Lorde to prep for her concert – Mitchel Clow
Lorde first caught my ears with “Royals” and “Tennis Court.” As Joe Jonas accurately put it in his Disney tell-all, “Because weird works. Look at Lorde.” She is the perfect artist for me to put on in the background to get work or cleaning done. The slow drone and low register vocals of Lorde’s songs are relaxing, and her lyrics have just the right amount of poetry and crypticism. Seeing her live when she comes to Denver, CO is going to be an interesting event next weekend. From what I’ve listened to in live recordings and have heard of in interviews, she still gets very nervous during her concerts. That green-ness is what’s making me so excited to see this raw talent doing her very best to entertain the masses with her unique mix of synth and poprock. That kind of effort just isn’t present with a lot of pop idols performances.
Watching ‘The Maze Runner’ and ‘What If?’ – Selina Wilken
I have no money, and no real time to go to the cinema, but screw it. I read The Maze Runner by James Dashner this summer, and while I had some issues with the pacing and predictability of the plot, I remember thinking how great of a film it would make. Seeing the positive reviews it’s been getting, and knowing what great actors are involved (Dylan O’Brien and Thomas Brodie-Sangster), have only made me more excited. I’m going to admit something: I’m probably more excited for this movie than I am for Mockingjay: Part 1.
As for What If?, it’s actually my brother dragging me to that one, but I’m all for supporting the Potter cast in their future endeavours. And considering that the last Dan Rad film I watched was Woman In Black, which scared the crap out of me, I can’t possibly be disappointed by this movie.
Rewatching ‘Arrow’ season 2 – Jen Lamoureux
I love Arrow. I think it is one of the best shows on TV so to prepare to season 3 I am going to rewatch season 2. Season 2 gave us new insight into Oliver as his frenemy from the island, who he thought was dead, brought the fight to Starling City. That isn’t the only surprise as we discover Thea’s true parentage and that being dead on Arrow doesn’t mean you stay dead. We also get our first glimpse of Barry Allen and the last episode is one of my favorites. This weekend will be spent relaxing and enjoying all that season 2 had to offer as I patiently wait for season 3 on October 8.
Watching ‘The Maze Runner’ – Marama Whyte
Although I didn’t love the book, I am so excited to finally see The Maze Runner this weekend. Author James Dashner created a fantastic story – what always caught me up was the actual writing. The book is so cinematic, and I feel like this story is really going to shine on film, rather than on the page. Interestingly, although I am usually the fandom nerd in any relationship, I am actually being “dragged” to the film by a huge The Maze Runner fan. They loved the book and I didn’t, so I am excited to see what we both think of the film.
