Ba Sing Se started to look an awful lot like King’s Landing on The Legend of Korra season 3, episode 10! Check out our recap and share your thoughts on “Long Live the Queen.”
Here’s what happened on the very Game of Thrones-esque The Legend of Korra season 3, episode 10, “Long Live the Queen.”
Escape-ish
Korra and Asami are hustled onto a Earth Kingdom airship headed for Ba Sing Se. Korra is desperate to get to the Earth Queen and warn her about Zaheer. Asami, who is amazing, manages to free herself and Korra by being, you know, amazing.
The ladies attack the captain and crew, who manage to broadcast a distress signal before the airship crashes in the desert. Fear of That Huge Desert Monster prompts the group to work together and repair the ship enough for a liftoff, but unfortunately most of the ship is promptly chomped on by That Huge Desert Monster upon liftoff.
Wheeling and dealing
On the way to Ba Sing Se, Mako angrily demands answers from the Red Lotus. All he gets is Ghazan’s assurance that the world will soon be “changed for the better.” Bolin elicits a few humanizing details about Ghazan and Ming-Hua before Zaheer orders the brothers gagged.
Zaheer offers the Earth Queen information on the “stolen” airbenders – plus Mako and Bolin – in exchange for Korra. He reminds her that imprisoning the Avatar may be politically sticky, and promises that Korra will not bother the Queen again.
The Queen agrees, and sends Mako and Bolin to the dungeon.
Gasp!
Zaheer listens in on the Earth Queen being told of Korra’s escape. He and the group are frustrated, imagining that Korra has slipped their grasp.
“It’s time to make her come to us,” Zaheer decides.
The Red Lotus confront the Queen in her throne room, easily taking out her guards. The Queen is enraged. “You wouldn’t dare attack a queen!” she shrieks
“I don’t believe in queens,” Zaheer says coldly, and weaves a sphere of air around her head, sucking away her breath. “Freedom is just as essential as air,” he says, as the Earth Queen chokes to death. “Without it, there is no life. There is only darkness.”
Breaking news
After murdering the Earth Queen, Zaheer makes an announcement to the people of Ba Sing Se – they are free from tyrants. Ghazan liquifies the city’s fabled walls with earthbending, and chaos breaks loose in Ba Sing Se.
Pass it on
In prison, Mako encourages Bolin to metalbend them out of the cell; he tries and fails twice. Instead, the cells are opened by Zaheer, who tells the boys that he has a message for Korra.
Only the beginning
Korra, Asami, and the crew are unscathed but terrified. The Supreme Goddess of Everything Asami manages to patch together a sand-sailer, and the group executes a narrow escape from That Huge Desert Monster.
Korra and Asami part on good terms from the airship crew at Misty Palms Oasis. Korra reunites with Naga, and then finds her father, Lin, and Lord Zuko at the pub.
Over the radio comes the brutal news: The Earth Queen’s reign is over (that’s Nickelodeon speak for “The Earth Queen is so totally dead, guys!”) and Ba Sing Se has descended into chaos.
Korra knows instantly who to blame for the violence. “I’m afraid this is only the beginning,” she says grimly.
