The Legend of Korra season 2 will arrive on Blu-ray and DVD on July 1. Is it a worthy addition to your Avatar shelf?
The Legend of Korra season 2 was a compelling and innovative installment of the Nickelodeon animated series. Dubbed “Book 2: Spirits,” the 14-episode run featured many breathtaking high points (the ‘origin of the Avatar’ episodes were particularly spectacular) as well as a few less successful moments (the less said about certain love triangles, the better.)
Still, The Legend of Korra season 2 was nothing if not brave storytelling. Show creators Bryan Konietzko and Mike DiMartino proved themselves more than willing to break down old perceptions and add major new elements to the mythology of the Avatar-verse. On the DVD and Blu-ray release of Book 2, fans can delve deeper into the choices and changes that made up the show’s sophomore season.
The Blu-ray edition of The Legend of Korra season 2 provides plenty of extra content for fans to enjoy. The centerpiece of the Blu-ray are the episode commentaries provided by Konietzko and DiMartino for all 14 episodes. The co-creators are joined in turns by co-writers Josh Hamilton and Tim Hedrick, co-executive producer Joaquim Dos Santos, composer Jeremy Zuckerman and sound-designer Benjamin Wynn.
Though the commentaries discuss less of the details of individual episodes then fans might prefer, the discussions still offer a wealth of behind-the-scenes information on The Legend of Korra season 2. DiMartino and Konietzko even allude to the disappointment expressed by some fans at various story arcs, and the casual discussion of their creative decisions will interest any fan of the series.
Fans hoping for more story-related commentary will find it on the “Kindred Spirits: Tenzin’s Family,” and “Feuding Spirits: Korra’s Family” featurettes, which delve into the conflicts and characters of Book 2. The “Inside the Book of Spirits” featurette is also very interesting, taking fans through each stage of production on the show – and sharing a few tidbits for The Legend of Korra season 3.
Less interesting are the ample “Scene Bending” clips, which compare unfinished animatics to the completed episodes. The “Re-Telling of Korra’s Journey,” a lengthy recap of the events of Book 1, is appreciated, but doesn’t offer much by way of new information.

Fans who are interested in this material will definitely want to pick up the Blu-ray edition of The Legend of Korra season 2. The DVD edition includes only four commentaries, two “Scene Bending” animatics, and one featurette – though it is significantly cheaper than its counterpart on Blu-ray.
Overall, The Legend of Korra season 2 Blu-ray edition earns its place on the shelves of all dedicated fans. The Blu-ray and DVD will be available for purchase on July 1.
