Mrs. Doubtfire 2 is in the works and Robin Williams will return!
According to Deadline, Fox 2000 is developing Mrs. Doubtfire 2 with Robin Williams to return as Daniel Hillard / Mrs. Doubtfire and Chris Columbus returning to direct. Fox has just hired Elf screenwriter David Berenbaum to write the sequel.
Mrs. Doubtfire was released all the way back in 1993, so it’s been a long 21 years since Williams played the iconic comedic role of a dad who dresses up as an old lady in order to spend time with his kids.
In the original, Williams was joined by Sally Field as Hillard’s wife. The rest of the cast included Pierce Brosnan, Matthew Lawrence, Mara Wilson, Lisa Jakub, and Harvey Fierstein.
Mrs. Doubtfire 2 will likely have to recast the roles of at least one of his kids, if they are included in the film. Lisa Jakub retired from acting completely and Mara Wilson hasn’t done much acting since 2000, though she has done some and can’t be ruled out from returning.
It’s possible that Mrs. Doubtfire 2 could go in a different direction completely than focusing on Williams’ Hillard’s relationship with his kids. At the end of the movie he does of course gain a TV show, and it wouldn’t be shocking to see the film focus on the effect that the show has had on his life.
Still, the emotional connection between the father and his kids was the core of the first Mrs. Doubtfire, and it wouldn’t really make much sense to throw that away completely. His kids wouldn’t be that old yet, but, if they married young, it’s conceivable that Mrs. Doubtfire 2 could focus on his relationship with any potential grandchildren that he might now have. We don’t know anything about the script, but this seems the most logical.
