Tatooine has played a major part in nearly every Star Wars movie, and it looks like that will continue through Star Wars: Episode VII.
It was recently announced that filming on Star Wars: Episode VII would commence in May, and then primarily at the legendary Pinewood Studios in London.
There will, of course, be filming that has to take place away from the studio, as is the case for almost every movie. According to Badass Digest, the first of those locations will be Morocco. Their sources say filming will begin on May 14, on location in Morocco for two weeks. It’s also possible some filming could be done in the (fairly) nearby Tunisia.
The report speculates that filming in Morocco could mean a return to Tatooine, and we agree. The planet has served as one of the main locations for the Star Wars series, and it was included in every film except for Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back, where it was just referenced.
Filming was done in Morocco and Tunisia in the past for Tatooine shoots, so it makes a lot of sense to return there. The report also suggests that some long standing but decayed sets from the original trilogy (mainly Episode IV – A New Hope) could be used. It would be very interesting if this were to happen. What would have forced them to decay in the 30 years that have passed in the Star Wars timeline?
With filming only six weeks away, casting announcements have to be coming very soon.
It was rumored that a lead actor shortlist includes Ed Speleers, John Boyega, Jesse Plemons, Matthew James Thomas, and Ray Fisher and that Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o was in the running for a female role.
