The Girls season 3 finale aired tonight on HBO. Check out our full recap of “Two Plane Rides” here!
As the ladies of HBO’s Girls take their curtain call for season 3, the gentlemen of the show are also in for quite a number of changes. This season saw honesty flowing from everyone about life, love, and the futures they’ve come to realize they want.
One on the way: A trip to the mailbox reveals two huge surprises for Hannah. First up, Caroline comes out of Laird’s apartment to retrieve their mail and shows off her very fertile belly. Although they are not sure of the sex, Caroline is sure that a woman is growing inside of her. Hannah tries to express her congratulations, but Caroline’s quick judgement of Adam shaking Hannah off for his debut leaves her unable to respond further.
In the pile of mail, bills and flyers covers up a very important letter that will ultimately change her life. Unfortunately, she rips it in half first.
Marnie answers Hannah’s visit with a rapid fire apology and explanation for sleeping with Ray, but finally Hannah’s not able to contain her excitement. Hannah was accepted to the Iowa Writers Workshop to work on her MFA. However, she is still on the fence about whether or not she is going to attend.
A little assistance: Jessa’s job is not exactly going over as advertised. Beadie’s intention for hiring her was to have someone with drug connections assist her with a suicide. Jessa’s concious, not to mention possible murder charges, prevent her from going all in on this plan. However, Beadie’s plea for mercy seems to sway her resistance a bit.
Shoshanna needs some assistance as well. After dealing with Jessa and her friends keeping her away from her studies most of the semester it is no wonder she failed one class. What is surprising is that she was enrolled in glaciology, or the study of ice and glaciers. What?! In the midst of her breakdown, Marnie shows up to confess that she slept with Ray. Not to change the subject or anything, but remember, everything is about Marnie. Luckily, Shosh’s rage pops right back and she screams, “I hate you,” pinning her on the bed.
Hannah calls her parents to deliver the good news, but they seem to be at odds over what is best for her. While Hannah expresses her concerns about leaving her home and debating whether writing can be taught, her mother takes the opposition that even thinking about not taking this leap is a horrible idea. Her place in grad school could be the opportunity to change her entire life. But their pride takes over and “we’ll figure it out” becomes the mantra of her next step!
Opening night: Hannah arrives backstage right before Adam’s big opening and decides to break the big news minutes before curtain. A classic move on Hannah’s part, her selfishness takes center stage once again and Adam calls her out for dropping this future bomb on him right before he needs to focus on his performance. Though he seems okay, it isn’t until after the show that he finally lets his thoughts be heard. Quite loudly…
Back to the performance, Marnie takes a trip backstage before the show as well, but she heads to see her musical partner. Desi takes advantage of their moment alone and kisses her. Of course, Marnie is thrilled, but Clementine, and Hannah, have differing opinions. Shoshanna goes for an intermission snack and confession to Ray. Shoshanna spills her heart to him and tells him that she is still in love, only to have him walk away.
Happily Never After: Jessa and Beadie set up the night of the pill induced suicide, but when the time comes to let the chemicals take their course, Beadie panics and tells Jessa to call 911.
After the play, Shoshanna returns to her apartment and begins to clean up the mess she made in response to her failure. As she folds the last blanket her glaciology text book reveals itself and she throws it into a mirror.
Marnie spies on Desi and Clementine having a blowout of an argument outside of the theater. She cannot hide her glee over the moment that she witnesses Desi may be free from his shackles and able to woo her soon enough.
Hannah and Adam’s scene steals the show when Adam exits the stage door disappointed with his performance. Hannah tries to tell him how much she enjoyed watching him on stage, but nothing seems to appease his distress over the fact that she is planning to leave him for two years. Hannah rebukes that he packed up and left her in the apartment to pursue his dream, why should this be any different. However moving two blocks away and moving across the country are two very different things. For once, Adam is tired of trying to figure out how to navigate the waters of their relationship.
Although Hannah is clearly upset about her uncertain future with Adam, it turns out that he was simply a few steps ahead of her. The love for what they want to do for themselves, to feel happy, and successful may not include each other in those plans.
