Typically it’s clear as to why deleted scenes are cut. This just-released Saving Mr. Banks deleted scene is not so obvious.
Saving Mr. Banks was released in December and told the story of Walt Disney’s successful attempt at making the now classic film Mary Poppins. It wasn’t an easy task, as author P.L. Travers was very hesitant to give up the rights.
Throughout the entire movie, it seemed as if Mary Poppins would never come to fruition. In the climax, Travers did, of course, agree to the film being made, but a big question throughout the film was why she was so hesitant to give up her rights.
A new deleted scene that has been released falls in a crucial moment of this struggle. In the film, when Travers (Emma Thompson) finds out that Disney (Tom Hanks) is planning on putting animated penguins in the movie, she decides to back out, keeping her rights. Later, Disney shows up at her house in England and convinces her to come back. This deleted scene falls in between those two scenes.
It was released by EW. Check it out:
If you agree with us, you too may wonder why this scene was cut. It seems to perfectly summarize the tone of the entire film. “You shouldn’t make promises you can’t keep,” Travers says. Travers was, of course, promised many things by many people, and this was her one chance to put her foot down when a promise to her wasn’t going to be kept.
For Disney, the scene may have explained to him why Travers cared so much, and it would have perhaps dulled the impact of the following scene in London. That scene was important, and it’s the only reason we can see for cutting this scene.
