Girls picks up tonight in the whirlwind of David’s passing. Check out our full recap to see what this means for Hannah’s future!
After Hannah’s publisher, David, turns up dead on the banks of the Hudson River, little is known about where that leaves Hannah’s book. Last week, Hannah’s lack of grief left her poking the edges of everyone else’s more developed emotional interior. This week Girls takes Hannah’s looming question and provides an answer that does not fit into her perfect plan.
His Wife? At David’s funeral, Hannah is shocked to see what the A-List authors David’s passing brings out. Aside from catching a glimpse at Zadie Smith, Hannah meets David’s wife. That’s right, his wife. Anneliese is not surprised to realize that Hannah thought that he was gay because he was, at times. Sexuality aside, Anneliese drops another bomb that shakes Hannah’s world. Her ebook, along with every project David was working on, is dead.
Hannah takes the service to process what that means for her future and finds Anneliese once again. If her project is dead, there must be another publisher that will take her work immediately. Sensing that Hannah is more concerned about her own future than David’s grieving mother, Anneliese offers to give Hannah the name of a publisher if she promises to get out. Not much growth from Hannah here…
Home, Sweet, Drama: Hannah places the call to the new publisher the second she arrives home. After landing a meeting she is greeted by the screaming match between Adam and Caroline in the kitchen. Once again the dysfunction between them is throwing Hannah’s need for positive energy off. Luckily, Hannah has seen every Dr. Phil intervention to date and mediates a discussion.
Adam and Caroline get out their gripes with each other out in the open. The flaws that Caroline has, including indecicivesness and always palaying the victim cursed with bad luck, rival Adam’s indecisiveness regarding his career and his opinionated personality. Eventually, Hannah reaches a passé and the two are willing to admit that deep down they love each other and truly care what happens to the other. Feliz Cuplianos.
That’s My Entire Life: Hannah’s meeting with a new set of editors holds a lot of promise. They not only love Hannah’s writing, they enjoy her daring choice to let everything out into the world. In the meeting, they ask Hannah to describe who they are selling to public. Her quirky response, regarding Midwestern weight and zero filtering of her thoughts rubs the editors the right way and they inform her that they are looking to publish a hard copy book.
Elated by the news, Hannah’s father calls with some disheartening news. The contract that Hannah signed with Millhouse Press grants them the rights to Hannah’s story for three years, regardless of the decision to drop the publication. Caroline’s suggestion that Hannah write a batch of new stories, sets off the ticking time bomb sitting under the thin veil of good news Hannah though she had.
How exactly does one go about rewriting 25 years worth of experiences? Everything from glitter pens, to Cuban refugees sits locked in Millhouse Press for the next three years. Hannah’s distaste for the pain she causes Adam on a regular basis leads her to throw her out of the apartment for good.
Adam returns home later that night to find Hannah curled up on the couch and his sister gone. Hannah explains that she thought throwing her out would be what he wanted. Adam starts to panic and leaves asking her what she was thinking. Caroline has nowhere to go and a history of problems waiting to follow her. Hannah sits still taking in the walls of her world falling around her.
Nice Basketball Shorts: Part of Marnie’s reinvention arrives with the addition of a furry kitten and a harsh reality check from Ray. Marnie arrives to Ray’s apartment hoping to hear his honest opinion of her. What she was not ready for was the truth to slap her hard in the face. Ray informs her that she is demeaning, self-obsessed, and judgmental. She cannot get through a conversation without making sure everyone in the room knows that she is better than them. Yet, Marnie also makes everyone feel like crap when they exclude her from their plans.
Ray recognizes that he may have gone a little to far and apologizes with a hug. Well, a hug that lands them on top of the table with their pants off. Sitting on opposite ends of the couch, Marnie gets up to leave and Ray asks if they can keep this interaction on the DL. The Marnie that Ray described in detail comes out and says, “Like I’d advertise this.” Never change, girl.
Good with Children: Jessa is holed up in Shosh’s apartment watching nonstop forensic files slowly driving Shosh crazy. In her attempt to have a life, Shosh’s GPA has begun to slip. If she wants to stick to her 15 year plan, she needs to focus on getting into a great business school. Jessa asks her what lies beyond her 15 year plan, to which Shosh replies, “Who would ever want to think about that?”
Jessa is making attempts to reinvent her image with vapor cigarettes and the desire to find employment somewhere with a touch of innocence. A children’s boutique is hiring and Jessa embarks on her first step to a new life when she enters the store. Shosh tries to yell that her criminal record may prevent any radical decisions in her future.
So, thoughts? Marnie’s sob story is beginning to become a stale plot point. A personal breakthrough for her is LONG over due. Meanwhile, as predicted by the tagline on this season’s poster, “Happily Whatever After” is slowly becoming the mantra of her life.
