Daniel Radcliffe and Dane DeHaan proved that they had impeccable chemistry in Kill Your Darlings, and they’ll capitalize on that by reteaming for College Republicans.
According to The Wrap, Radcliffe and DeHaan will return to the college setting in College Republicans. They’ll be joined by their Kill Your Darlings director John Krokidas.
The Wrap reached out to representatives of both Radcliffe and DeHaan. While Radcliffe’s reps denied his involvement and DeHaan’s have yet to respond, they have it on good authority from multiple sources that this reteaming will happen. It’s likely this is just a denial situation because it has not been officially announced yet.
The script from Wes Jones was on the Black List in 2010. The Black List is a list of the best unproduced screenplays at the end of a given year, and College Republicans was the script with the most votes, ranking higher than American Bullshit, better known now as the Academy Award nominated American Hustle.
The script is based on the true story from 1973 centered around Karl Rove. Rove, to be played by DeHaan, runs a campaign for national College Republican Chairman. Under the guidance of his campaign manager Lee Atwater (Radcliffe), Rove’s campaign is a dirty one.
While that topic sounds like it could be as intense as the politics that it surrounds, it’s supposedly light in tone. It centers around a road trip that Rove and Atwater take to gain support, and it’s something of a buddy-comedy.
While everything in Kill Your Darlings may have not worked perfectly, it was the chemistry between Radcliffe and DeHaan that worked the best. It would be interesting to see them work again under a different setting.
Previously Shia LaBeouf and Paul Dano were considered to star in it, but that is no longer the case.
