Lana Del Rey’s “Once Upon A Dream” cover debuted with a new Maleficent trailer during the 2014 Grammy Awards.

Listen to “Once Upon A Dream” covered by Lana Del Rey in full below. You can download it for free via Google Play.

The song originates from Disney’s Sleeping Beauty released in 1959, but Lana is covering the song for the upcoming live-action movie Maleficent starring Angelina Jolie. The titular wicked villain made her first appearance in Sleeping Beauty, thus the decision to release a cover.

As expected, Lana’s version is much darker than the original performed by a colorful Disney princess. It’s simple with a slight radio effect over the vocals, making for a haunting performance that should please fans of Lana and intrigue Maleficent’s general audience.

The song will be available for purchase from Amazon soon. We’ll share a link once it’s officially released.

Check out the new trailer for Maleficent which carried the official debut of “Once Upon a Dream” below.

The synopsis for the movie reads, “A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal—an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom—and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.”

The movie hits theaters May 30, 2014.

As always, Lana’s magical voice captures my emotions.

  • zara

This is absolutely badass, only watching it for angelina jolie. she will kill it.

  • bill.i.am.

this was the first trailer to give me chills since the deathly hallows part 2

    • Harshita Lawania

same, Lana’s voice is perfect for this movie as it only makes the movie more haunting

  • Jnthn44

IN the trailer, i think it’s perfect. outside the trailer, it’s a little odd

    • Kevin Landeen

Agree 100% with this. With the trailer, it works PERFECT, but outside of it, I am not liking it. It works with the movie, but alone it is odd.

      • 17jeda

I would like to add that the song sounds good during the trailer, but outside the trailer, it does not

        • reiterate

I agree, and would like to add that in the trailer the music sounds great, outside the trailer, it sounds a bit odd, does not sound good.

      • kiki

Definitely the lyrics is what makes it awkward. It’s supposed to be this pretty love song, but in Maleficent it plays with it and how Aurora didn’t know Prince Phillip once upon a dream, but rather Maleficent. So when Lana sings it in the trailer, you get this context, but outside you’re like, “huh?” Still really good even if it’s odd sounding

        • Paula Olson

I think we’re going to find out Maleficent knew King Stephan and maybe it’s not Phillip she has a beef with.

  • AshQuill

I caught “Matt Smith” listed as EP (it’s another Mr. Smith) at the end so I went to IMDB to look up the movie and ended up finding that Peter Capaldi is in it. LOL.

  • Kristen O’Brien

That’s definitely the best trailer for it so far and it’s because of the song

  • John

Really liking Jolie’s accent for Maleficent

  • Liderc

Jolie looks sick in this, can’t wait.

  • Madeline

This movie is becoming more and more attractive with every new story I read. Lana’s voice is lovely as always.

  • L.G.

Maleficent’s smile seemed positively wicked both times.

  • Julia Lovelett

It says that Google Play is not avalible in my country (I live in Canada). How can I get the song then? I don’t care if I have to pay for it, I just want it!

    • Eve

  • andrew14

My childhood just grew fifty degrees darker. And that’s saying something when you consider my childhood.

  • Lara

    Angelica Jolie? ANGELINA.

  • ForFrodo

WHOA! That was amazing! Really like Lana Del Rey’s cover too

  • lorepottter

Wow, what a song, damn, it was perfect

  • Jonathan Arrowood

LOL at the “Angelica Jolie” typo…nice. I cannot wait for this movie!

  • frezb

Am I the only one who doesn’t like the song? Lana has a great voice but I am not feeling this version.

  • Alexa

  • WhatTheGrace

The song makes the trailer 1000 times more epic!!
Lana’s voice is one of a kind!

  • Liderc

wish the cheek bones were a little less pronounced, have a feeling that it’ll be a bit distracting. She has pretty insane cheek bones to begin with, they didn’t need to exaggerate that much.

    • Daniel Coeur de Lion

Her character is not exactly human though. So surely the filmmakers can take some artistic liberties with her face. You’re busy looking at her cheekbones, while I cannot take my eyes off how wickedly beautiful those animal-like eyes of hers are.

  • LuLu

Could not be a better version of this song, especially evil with Angelina–agreed she will KILL it!

  • Winkyxx

    Damn this looks amazing!

  • Winkyxx

Does the battle scene remind anyone of Narnia?

  • morgen71

This looks fantastic, and the song is so so epic!

  • m

I cannot stop listening to this.

  • Lucas Colvara da Cunha

WOW, fantastic version and sounds creepy!!

  • http://t.co/LzNrdNOiyB Lady Xerox

Slay a bit Queen Lana <3 Oscar nom coming up again I see.

  • Matty Marie Rae

    Oh my jesus!

    This is perfect!

  • Liliana Sa

Why oh why, has there to be always someone that has to make a Harry Potter comparison to a new movie?!?! We get Harry Potter is a big deal, I am a fan too, but come on , really?!?! Can’t they leave it alone for one second?!?! Why can’t a movie stand alone without it being compared to anything related to Harry Potter?….Even if it’s a reaction, ‘Oh it gave me goosebumps , just like the last Harry Potter trailer, oh my!!!!’….oh and I’m sure I’m going to get some backlash about saying something remotely negative having to do with ‘the best series in the whole entire world!!!!!) and believe me when I say I am a fan, but please let’s not over do it , and give it a rest.

BTW, Angelina Jolie’s cheeks were freaky!!!!… How cool!!! Gives it the right vibe for Maleficent!!!!!

  • Ilovesfashion

    Wow I love her voice

  • Paula Olson

It’s great, but the lyrics are different from the original. She sings, “…that look in your eyes is so familiar a gleam.” The original lyrics are, “…that gleam in your eyes is so familiar a gleam.”
