Two of the biggest Oscar pre-cursor awards, the Producers and Writers Guilds, have announced their 2014 nominations, with Dallas Buyers Club the big surprise nominee.
Along with the Directors Guild Awards (which announces nominees next week), these two guilds account for two of the biggest portions of the Academy, along with the Screen Actors Guild, of course. While certain rules and ineligibilities always account for a few differences between the Academy Awards nominations, in terms of pre-cursor awards, these are some of the biggest.
Due to ineligibility in the Writers Guild Awards the likes of 12 Years a Slave, Philomena, Fruitvale Station and Philomena did not receive nominations. These absences historically do not hurt Oscar changes, however, as last year Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained was deemed ineligible for the WGA, and went on to win the Oscar.
Because of these ineligibilities, as well as a massive snub for the Coen brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis in both nominations, there was room for some surprise 2014 nominations, including the Matthew McConaughey-led Dallas Buyers Club, which earned noms from both guilds.
