The first teaser trailer for Game of Thrones season 4 was released last night, and though brief, it offers a powerful glimpse at exciting things to come.

Though the premiere of Game of Thrones season 4 is still several months away, hungry fans were treated to a taste of what the season has to offer in HBO’s “End of Year” promo video.

The tantalizingly brief teaser displays the first official footage from Game of Thrones season 4. Though a mere eight seconds long, the teaser does include several exciting shots of familiar characters and forthcoming epic moments. Check out our analysis below, after you have re-played the clip a few times.

The first shot of the trailer is a figure with a spear, galloping toward a stone wall on a white horse. Shot from behind, the figure’s only identifying trait is the yellow cloth wrapped around his (or her) head; could this be our first glimpse of Pedro Pascal as fan-favorite Oberyn Martell? Or is this a figure part of Daenerys’ story in Game of Thrones season 4? Let the speculation begin!

The next shots have been converted to GIF form by enterprising fans, and offer somewhat more by way of analysis. The emphatic underdog Tyrion Lannister walks through a seemingly-hostile crowd in the Red Keep’s throne room, his hands apparently manacled together…

Tyrion GOT4

The clip of Tyrion is followed by everybody’s least favorite king ever, Joffery, looking characteristically sour at an outdoor event. Maybe he’ll kill someone to lift his spirits.

Joffery GOT4

Next is the briefest shot of Jaime Lannister, looking up as he turns the pages of a very important book in a very important tower. Though Jaime’s story line has been pulled forward from it’s trajectory in the Song of Ice and Fire series, it’s exciting to see Ser Jaime in place to play out what we anticipate to will be a very powerful scene.

Jaime GOT4

(Extra points if you noticed the golden hand dangling from Jaime’s right sleeve.)

Finally, the trailer ends on a beautiful shot of Sansa Stark, looking unusually hopeful.

Sansa GOT4

It’s also worth noting that Sansa’s hair and clothing are markedly different from her usual elaborate appearance in King’s Landing. Will Lady Sansa, long a prisoner in the stronghold of Lannister power, be on the move in Game of Thrones season 4?

Though the teaser did omit many of our favorite (and least favorite) characters from its brief attentions, it’s great to see the world of Game of Thrones in action again. Hopefully, this teaser will soon be followed by more new footage, sooner rather than later!

The official premiere date for Game of Thrones season 4 has not yet been announced, but the show will return to HBO in Spring 2014.

What is your favorite piece of new footage from ‘Game of Thrones’ season 4?

And we all know who loved Cat a lot ….

      • Callan

        Only Cat.

        • I Hope Not

      • TheSoy

OMG it’s like you’re a psychic who has a book that can peer into the future!

  • Got

Way too slow guys, has been online for at least 24 hours.

    • Gary65

I dunno why but they do this with every Game of Thrones story. Winter is Coming has the story on their website at least 24 hrs before Hypable gets around to reporting it. Which is weird, seeing as one of its podcasts is paired with WiC. I dunno what it is :/

      • Liderc

Selina used to cover GOT and doesn’t seem like she’s around much anymore, probably why it’s slow.

        • Gary65

She’s not on GOO much anymore either. Did she leave? :(

          • Diana

I think she tweeted the other day that she started grad school or something.

        • Selina

          Stop talking about me….

  • WhatTheGrace

The Sansa scene looks like it could be from a dream of hers, or maybe she sees Baelish coming back? (i haven’t read the books so i could be wrong)

    • Valentine

Nope! Go read them! You will love them!!

  • Gary65

The rider is definitely something to do with Dany’s story. Oberyn is coming to King’s Landing and none of the geography around KL looks like that. The only part of the Seven Kingdoms that looks like that is Dorne and we don’t go there til the next book.

I love how they’ve started designing Sansa in the same fashion they used to do with Catleyn. The hair colour in particular is exactly like Cat’s :’(

  • Gavin Walsh

I wonder how SPOILER there going to show Jaime in KL for the PW

  • ForFrodo

I’m so ready for this!!!! BRING ON THE TRAILER!

  • Castinghub

Can’t wait to see the full trailer!

  • Marcia

Jaime’s new short hair makes him look like Gendry.

  • EinMugenTenshin

Why no gif for the first part with the rider?

  • Tyler

The Rider is the hero of Mereen he is charging towards Deanerys!

  • adam

the rider is not oberyn martell, it must be at Mereen with Dany (if you’ve read the books, you’ll know why)

  • deanyoungblood10

Tough to “speculate” when all the answers to your questions are already known…

  • grace

as someone who has read the books, it’s really fun to watch all the anticipation. guys. if you want to know all you nee to dod is read.

  • Rakesh Murthy

Jaime got his hand back??????? I mean…. how?????

    • Tnuoc

It is a fake metal hand that is attached to his right arm. It doesn’t actually work.

      • Jaime

I always preferred left hand anyway

        • Right Hand

          Id rather not be decapitated..

  • Andrew

They picked some big moments to tease. Folks who have read the books know why Tyrion is in chains. As for Joffrey, we’ve learned that the outdoor shot is for THAT scene. Yes, Jaime has a new “hand”. But it ain’t flesh and bone. Sansa, yes, she finally gets out of Westeros but I ain’t telling how.

    • Tnuoc

Technically she still is in Westeros.

      • different from the book

Unless she crossed the Narrow Sea.

SPOILER: I think you meant King’s Landing, but do you think that shot is from her final chapter in Storm of Swords? It looks like winter ;).

      • Hoffmann

Seriously? The god damn white walkers started moving at the end of season 1.. They’re going to end the 4th season with the same shit? Winter starting….? Somebody needs to give jack frost a swift kick to the nuts so he can get to work.

        • La De Da

Their seasons are much longer than ours….. Seasons for them can last decades, the Stark children have never experienced winter and look how old they are.

    • I Hope Not

SPOILER the Vale is in Westeros

  • Tnuoc

The rider is the champion of Meeren who challenges one of Dany’s champions. In the book Dany sent Strong Belwas, who was an unsullied, however in the TV show I suspect Daario/Jorah/Barristan will be her champion. My guess it is Daario, or they might have Barristan fight, but Jorah will notice his age is starting to show, which will cause tension between Jorah and Barristan (Dany trusts Barry more than Jorah). This will cause Barry to reveal Jorah’s secret.

    • Trotter

Strong Belwas is not an unsullied. He is a eunuch slave trained in the Mereen fighting pits.

  • HS

Weird to spend so much time speculating…just read the books already!!!

Best extreme teaser of all time! :D

  • Sloth

If you have read the books, you know exactly what’s happening in each of these bits. Get reading, the books are still better.

  • dsfds

Favorite piece of new footage? How about the charging horseman that was left out of the gifs…

  • http://cosplayhotties.tumblr.com/ cosplay hotties

you have a typo, as much as I don’t like him it’s not called “joffery” :o)

  • Anthony Palma

Are people serious? How the crap can you get excited from 8 seconds of nonsense?

  • Ro

*SPOILERS* Olenna is leaving Joff in the trailer, if y’all read the books then you know what she’s stirring. Sansa in dark clothes means that she will escape KL. That desert scene is in Mereen, the guy with the yellow is the the guy that the Mereenese send to challenge them. Jaime gets a golden hand. Finally Tyrion is in the Great Hall of the Red Keep and he’s chained with shackles for something related to Joff’s wedding.

You need to be posting more fake spoilers. The only way to stop the spoilers from getting their kicks is not to swear at them…that just ruins the show by proving that the spoiler was true. The way to deal with them is to post fake spoilers everywhere. Once everyone is doing that, there is no longer any such thing as a spoiler, since people no longer know what to believe.

  • jhasdguf

I’ll start…Arya was taught to use a sword in one hand…her left. Jaime previously used a two-handed sword, but he lost his RIGHT hand. When Arya masters the water dance, she teaches it to Jaime as he is returning her to her mother to keep his oath.
