Original Walking Dead showrunner Frank Darabont still has harsh words for the network he used to work with two years after break up.
Though he admits he’s still not in a mental state that allows him to talk about what exactly happened when he and the network parted ways over Dead, Darabont vows that he “will get there” in a new interview with Rolling Stone.
“I had to take some time off after that to really reassess everything, to really get over the emotional devastation of having some truly malevolent people tear asunder a brilliant family that had gathered to create this hit for them. It was a very, very deep and loving family, the cast and the crew, and to have that torn apart was – when somebody throws a hand-grenade into that situation, it’s tremendously emotionally trying.”

Darabont gave the answer when he was asked if he had seen any episodes of The Walking Dead since his departure. He says he hasn’t, “because, for the same reason that if the woman that I loved left me for the Pilates instructor and they sent me an invitation to their wedding, for the same reason I wouldn’t go to the wedding, I haven’t seen an episode of The Walking Dead since then.”
In additional comments Darabont struggles to find the words to explain the situation. He did, however, speak highly of the cast who have equally positive feelings towards him.
The showrunner stepped down from running The Walking Dead in the middle of season 2’s production. Reports indicated that the reason for his departure had to do with a reduced budget for the zombie drama amongst strained relationships with higher-ups at the network. He was replaced by Glen Mazarra, who was then replaced by current showrunner Scott Gimple.
