Here are the highlights from Grey’s Anatomy season 10, episode 9 “Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word”:
- The episode opens with Callie shopping and nearly having a mental breakdown when she can’t find what she’s looking for. She apologizes to the store’s saleswoman and explains she’s under a lot of pressure.
- The episode then goes back a month ago to Derek and Callie making a presentation on their brain mapping project. In the middle of it she gets served papers for a lawsuit.
- The episode then goes back to four months ago when Cristina tells Callie about the professional snowboarder Travis Reed, who needs help. They’re at Meredith’s baby shower and Arizona surprises Callie by saying they should have a baby. When Arizona volunteers to carry the baby this time, Callie excitedly agrees.
- At the hospital, Travis arrives and brings a crowd of fans. When he meets Callie, his team is careful to make sure that he will still be able to perform his tricks with a new hip. Callie is concerned that she’s never used the style that he requests. But Travis is confident that he’ll be able to pull it off, so she agree to look into it.
- Callie fights with the hospital’s lawyers about settling. She doesn’t agree she had any negligence so doesn’t want to settle.
- When Arizona comes to pick up Sofia the morning of the trial, she tells Callie she’ll do whatever she wants to help her. Arizona’s confused to see that Callie put her wedding ring back on. So Callie explains the lawyers told her to.
- Owen arrives at the courthouse to support Callie, which somewhat helps her nervousness. But not much. The courtroom goes silent when Travis is wheeled in and they show he’s clearly missing both legs below the knee.
- Things don’t look good early on when the jurors seem to side with Travis and his lawyer right away.
- A flashback shows that Callie may have left a sponge in Travis in a rush to close him up because he started crashing in surgery, and that two weeks after his surgery he had contacted an infection in his incision which caused a heart murmur.
- When Jo’s turn on the stand doesn’t go well, Callie retreats to the bathroom to cry it out and change her torn pantyhose. Arizona walks in and Callie can’t help but tell her everything that’s going wrong. But Arizona manages to help by showing her a drawing Sofia made in school and giving it to her to hold on in the courtroom to calm her down. They laugh at Callie accidentally putting on the rhinestone pantyhose.
- A flashback shows Arizona and Callie reading sperm donor profiles. When Arizona asks her if she’ll like being pregnant, Callie tells her about all the awful things to expect.
- That night, Callie is surprised when her father shows up to support her. He tells her not to worry too much about the lawsuit because it happens to him all the time. When he asks to see Sofia, she has to explain that Arizona has her because they split.
- Callie confesses to her Dad that she feels pathetic having another spouse cheat on her. To which he replies he won’t hit a lady but he can make it happen with a phone call.
- Flashback: Callie comes home to find out that Arizona has taken a pregnancy test and it’s positive. They’re both elated.
- Callie tells the board members at the hospital that although she isn’t settling with Travis, the hospital should. When she leaves the room, Jackson tells the rest of the members that the legal team says they should settle as well. Cristina says Travis could easily win the case, as she saw the surgery first hand.
- Flashback: Cristina is mad about Travis’ murmur and says he may need another replacement valve. Jo calls them back to the room because he’s lost blood flow to his feet. Cristina and Callie argue about whether his leg or heart should be treated first.
- They end up treating his leg first but after surgery both his legs have lost blood flow!
- On the stand, Travis’ girlfriend tells the jury that she overheard Callie telling Jo that she doesn’t want to be the one that turns an olympic athlete into a doorstop.
- Flashback: Arizona and Callie look at a house to buy.
- After the surgery, Callie tried to talk to Travis about what happened, but he refuses to talk to her. In the courtroom, he tells the jury that he trusted her and that snowboarding was his whole world and now it’s gone. Without it, he doesn’t know who he is and he blames Callie. (Even we feel bad for him.)
- The prosecution rests its case after saying that Callie admitted to Travis that if anyone was to blame about what happened, it was her.
- Callie’s dad berates her about their marriage being thrown away. He doesn’t agree with Callie just throwing away her family.
- Back at court Callie takes the stand and explains why she made the choice to leave the sponge in Travis during surgery. She also explains why she chose to go in for her surgery before Cristina’s.
- Flashback: Callie missed Arizona’s doctor appointment because of the surgery. Sadly, the baby had no heartbeat. Arizona tells Callie that she can’t try for another baby because she can’t bear the loss.
- After the amputation, Callie yelled at Travis for taking out his anger on his girlfriend. That’s when Callie apologized for what happened. She explains she apologized because she understands how devastating the situation is due to what happened with Arizona, but she doesn’t think she was negligent during surgery.
- Callie and Meredith get to Callie’s apartment to find a letter waiting. It tells Callie that the joint she used on Travis has caused deaths in patients due to a bacteria. It was dated three weeks before Travis’ surgery.
- Meredith tells Callie that she shouldn’t bring it up in the courtroom because it could cause her to lose the case. Just then she gets a call that the jury reached a verdict. The jury finds her not guilty. While everyone around her celebrates, Callie sits in silence.
- Callie can’t understand why her dad is pushing for her to give Arizona another chance. He admits that he cheated on her mother once and she forgave him. If it wasn’t for them staying together, they never would have had Callie.
- When Callie goes to ask Arizona if they can start over, she’s in shock. Leah, who was hiding in the corner, seems even more shocked!
