The final two pages of the Breaking Bad series finale script have surfaced online thanks to a recent event attended by Vince Gilligan, and they offer new insight into the lead characters’ state of mind.
The outcome seen during the Breaking Bad season 5 finale (which aired nearly a month to the day) may not appear to be any different than how you interpreted, but the final two pages do show in detail Walt and Jesse’s frame of mind when the episode aired to a record number of viewers on September 29.
There are two particularly noteworthy moments in the script that we hadn’t heard about from the Breaking Bad team before. For one, Jesse’s outcome is described in new detail. Writes Gilligan, “Grimly determined, fearing nothing, he speeds through the darkness. From here on, it’s up to us to say where he’s headed. I like to call it ‘something better,'” meaning that Gilligan imagines he finds a new life that is better to live for than the awful things he’d been put through over the past couple years.
Meanwhile, Walt’s ending is described as final moments with “his True Love” as he dies with a look of “faint satisfaction” on his face in the meth lab. Before he falls to the ground and dies, he notices that Jesse was in the middle of a cook before being pulled into Jack’s living room. Walt approved of how the session was going. “The cook is going well. He taught Jesse well. All is as it should be,” Gilligan writes in the script.
See the script for yourself below. The pages were snapped at an exhibit in The Writers Guild Foundation at the Austin Film Festival recently.
While Breaking Bad is now well in the past, we have the spinoff Better Call Saul to look forward to (no release date yet) as well as the Breaking Bad box set arriving on store shelves next month.
