Those excited for more Ron Burgundy will certainly be happy to hear that an alternate cut of Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues is likely to see the light of day.
With many comedies, it is likely that several different jokes are tried in scenes. With comedies that feature a lot of improv, even more jokes are tried and eventually scrapped. The best ones make the final cut, but that doesn’t mean many of the jokes eventually passed on aren’t funny as well.
In an interview with The Empire, director Adam McKay (Anchorman, Talladega Nights, Step Brothers, The Other Guys) revealed that they are working on a second cut of Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues with a full new set of jokes.
We did so much improv on this one that we can literally replace every single joke in the movie and put in alt scenes and alt improv runs. I think the editor’s working on it right now, with 250 new jokes. I think it would be really funny to put it in theatres for midnight showings. I know that I personally, if I loved a movie and someone told me that, like if Airplane! had been released with all-new jokes, I’d be like, ‘you’ve got to be fucking kidding me!’ I’d see it in a second.
If this does get released in theaters, odds are that it unfortunately won’t be released in a lot of them, leaving many (this writer included) left out. Here’s to hoping it makes the DVD/Blu-ray release. With the demand that should exist, it wouldn’t be shocking to see it sold separately.
Just this week, two brand new Anchorman 2 trailers were released. The trailers’ new scenes include Brick’s supposed funeral, a car accident caused by Ron Burgundy’s thinking that cruise control also steers a vehicle, their arrival at the 24-hour news network GNN in New York, Brick scaring himself when using a virtual weather map, Harrison Ford’s cameo, and many more.
