NBC has announced that Community will be returning to the airwaves for a two-part season 5 premiere on Thursday, January 2.
It looks like we just got another reason to celebrate the New Year. Community will be making its long-awaited return to television at 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 2 for a two-part season 5 premiere.
Season 5 has been in production for months but NBC has been holding on to the new episodes, waiting to see how their fall schedule panned out before choosing a date to air them. Now that Welcome to the Family and Ironside (which NBC also announced will both officially be taken off the schedule) have struck out, its Community‘s turn to bat.
Season 5 of Community sees the return of creator/showrunner Dan Harmon after his shocking firing prior to the uneven fourth season. Harmon, perhaps grateful to have his show back, has been open regarding the production of the fifth season, noting a week ago that should NBC want episodes, he could have episodes to them in a “few weeks.”
Harmon has also announced that Nathan Fillion, Jonathan Banks, John Oliver, Walton Goggins, Rob Cordry and Brie Larson will be appearing in the new season.
Chevy Chase departed his role as Pierce Hawthorne towards the end of last season and Donald Glover has announced that he will be leaving the show following the fifth episode this season.
Following the one-hour premiere on January 2, Community will return to its half-hour 8 p.m. time slot on Thursdays, bumping Parks and Recreation to 8:30 p.m.
And just like that, we’re one step closer to six seasons and a movie.
