Donald Glover, who plays Troy Barnes on Community, has explained in a series of Instagram posts why he left the show.

When it was announced a few months back that Donald Glover was leaving Community after the fifth episode of the upcoming fifth season, many assumed that it was to further pursue his music career as Childish Gambino.

But according to some hand-written letters on hotel stationery that Glover posted pictures of to Instagram, that may not entirely be the case. The letters are very confessional, and at times unclear, but Glover makes sure to explain that his music career didn’t take him away from Community. The reasons, rather, were far more adrift-in-your-mid-twenties sadder.

Glover is clearly struggling with something and perhaps didn’t think he could continue on making jokes in Community. The letter is sad but somehow made even sadder by the hotel stationery.

It’s interesting that Glover mentions being worried that Dan Harmon is upset with him because Harmon is the type of social media personality who very well may respond to this on Twitter or Tumblr.

The Community letter was one of seven total pictures that Glover posted. The remaining letters to fans reveal even more anxiety and distress.

It turns out that, as suspected, Glover is a pretty self-aware, soulful dude.

What do you think of Donald Glover’s ‘Community’ departure explanation?

This is heartbreaking. If it’s possible though, I love and respect Donald Glover even more because of it. He has written down and shared things that most of us are afraid to even admit to ourselves.

“I feel like I’m letting everyone down. I’m afraid people hate who I really am. I’m afraid I hate who I really am. I’m afraid I’m here for nothing…No matter how bad you fuck up, or mistakes you’ve made during the year, your life, your eternity. You’re always allowed to be better.”

I can’t be the only one who cried after reading these.

Heartbreaking, and upsets me to read this from such a brilliant and talented person. Hope he gets the help and support of his friends and family he needs.

  • Bufufyne

Ugh I just want to hug him ;-; I hope his not getting hate for his rap lyrics (which is stupid because there is a lot worse out there) because obviously he and Childish Gambino are separate entities in a way, Donald is just as vulnerable as the rest of us.

  • Dan

Jesus this is such a polar opposite from Troy. Shows what a great actor he is. I hope he’ll be okay.

  • Juan Pedia

Truth be told, it’s rather ironic that he’s leaving Community with these reasons in mind. His role in Community never lets me down, has made a positive difference in my life, and certainly doesn’t count for nothing. Community isn’t a great show just because of its spectacularly-written and delivered jokes, but also for the real issues the characters deal with and the lessons they learn. Like Glover and many of the viewers who watch Community, the characters aren’t really sure where they’re going for life, but they have each other to get through their troubles with. They remind each other that they do matter and make positive differences in each other’s lives. I’m am glad, though, that despite his decision to move on, Donald Glover seems to be embracing what his character (and the show) has taught me: that it’s okay to be unsure of yourself and your purpose – just do your best and watch what happens.

I can’t help but identify immensely with him, because I’m going through the same type of situation. I guess people call it an existential crisis.

  • Glaciusx

Do you know that sinking feeling you get in your chest when you see or read something incredibly sad? Yeah, I just got that. :(

I hope whatever he’s going through, he makes it out okay.

Big Community fan here (as you can probably tell by my User Name). I’ve got a pretty bad social anxiety disorder, mixed with clinical depression, that I’ve been dealing with since I was about 11 years old (and years of being bullied preceding that), and honestly, I’ve tried in the past to write a coherent listing of MY fears and anxieties, and it came out almost exactly like Donald’s little notes here. Maybe 80 percent of what he said directly applies to me, but I’m guessing it really applies to most of us as human beings. So it’s sad to see it written down plainly in such a way, but I also know personally how cathartic it can be to just get those thoughts and emotions out into the open and face them for what they are. Donald just turned 30 a few weeks ago, and I’m sure the existential crisis many people go through when reaching that age (I’m no exception) had something to do with his lengthy “confessions”, along with stress, taking on a new and uncertain direction in life, etc. Having been in a fairly similar head-space not too many years ago, I sincerely wish the best for him in the future. I’m going to enjoy these last few episodes of Community with Donald, too; I’m sure that Dan Harmon is going to give Troy a beautiful and proper send-off.

I can relate to this so much right now. UGH, life really finds ways to screw you over when you finally begin to think you can be happy.

  • Rachel Whelen

This is the first I’m hearing about him leaving the show. This makes me so sad, I feel like crying. I just finished rewatching season three and Donald kills it in every scene. I’m going to miss him so much. I hope he can find some peace and happiness away from the show.

  • Lauren

Been there. Felt that. Still a bad idea to walk away from a good thing. But if he thinks it’s what he needs, so be it. I hope he finds what he’s looking for.

  • Katherine

    Clearly he needs help.

    • Dan

Ironically I think he needs people that care for him aka a community

  • Mats Svensson

    Too bad.
    Hope he will be back,

He seem to do great work, even under pressure.

  • Lynnie Penny

I pray that this is some sort of ruse to hype his upcoming release. If
not, my heart breaks for this talented young man. He is verbalizing what
many young people feel these days,.. the pressure is incredible. I love
his character on Community and I hope his “cruise around the world”
will bring him back to the study group some day.

  • Daniel Ireland

Sounds like he’s dealing with depression. Hope the guy works it all out. He’s a a talented and hilarious actor.

  • ken

what a fucking crybaby. get back on the shot it aint the same without you!

    • joseph

nice job being fucking considerate of the fact that he’s a real person

  • Deniqua

At first this did sound depressing, but then I started hearing the sentences as lyrics, and everything changed for me. I was bopping my head to his pain, thinking I felt the same. He’s brave, he’s an artist.

  • JavierP

Many human beings in the world go through with depression they believe there is nothing left in there life but that is not true even in the darkest of realms there is always a light when you least expect it. When someone you care about is gone you remember those special moments with them you start to cry and believe you could never get better but whatever religion the human being of this world believe in there is always one single truth THEY ARE ALWAYS WITH YOU,WATCHING YOU LIVE YOUR LIFE,PROTECTING YOU EVEN AT YOUR LOWEST THEY ARE YOUR FRIEND YOUR FAMILY NEVER SUCUUMB TO THE DARKEST NEVER FEEL SAD THESE EMOTIONS ANGER,LOVE,JEOUSLY,HAPPINESS,MISERY,DESPAIR, AND SHAME THESE ARE EMOTIONS THAT MAKE US HUMAN SO DON’T BE SAD ALWAYS REMEMBER YOU ARE NOT ALONE EVERYTHING TURNS OUT BETTER EVEN IN THE DARKEST OF NIGHT.

  • Kyrie M. Cooper

It kinda made me sad in a good way. Im happy for what Donald is now, I just wish He is too. :)

  • Community

Mein!! I miss Troy(Donald) in community. I feel like the show is now forcing itself without troy and pierce!!! Please com back Troy(Donald)!!!!!!

  • AJ Mader

It’s a shame he’s at a point where he’s this strongly affected by everything — we all go through these things. Some of us have an easier time than others — but the reason for that is frequency. Donald is not going through anything truly alone, and yet he may be left alone while he goes through it. What he mentions in the pictures shown — we all have been through these situations — but again, frequency — though he’s not going through anything on these lists that most would consider out of the ordinary, he’s going through all these things at once. So life becomes relentless.

I hope he has someone — alone it doesn’t get better with time, but with a purpose, the purpose will become more important. Hope he comes back to community — and I hope his life levels out for him.

  • Richard

That was amazing. He lost me temporarily at “bro rape” and I had to google check he wasn’t an actual rapist. Phew. Looks like he outgrew Bro Rape after all since I’d never heard of it. As for what he masturbates to, well, dude’s name is Dong Lover. Masturbate to whatever you want my friend. Love and respect.
