After what is being called a major bidding war, Fox has grabbed Gotham, a television series based on Commissioner Gordon from Warner Bros. TV and Mentalist creator Bruno Heller.
Gotham will feature Commissioner Gordon, who was played by Gary Oldman in The Dark Knight trilogy, but Oldman will not be involved, and the character will be recast for Fox’s TV series. The show will follow James Gordon’s origin story, as well as some of the famous villains found in Gotham city.
Deadline reports that Gordon will again be a detective in the Gotham City Police Department, but hasn’t met Batman in the show. The caped crusader won’t be introduced in the series at any point. Warner Bros. has Batman all locked up in Man of Steel’s sequel, as they recently cast Ben Affleck in the role.
Created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, detective James Gordon first appeared in the very first Batman comic in 1939. His most famous portrayal is of course in director Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, when he was played by Gary Oldman.
Gotham will be the second DC comics based TV show, with Flash coming to CW. There hasn’t been a TV show based around any Batman characters in years, so it’s bound to be an original take on the Gordon character. There aren’t many details known about the show, but now that the deal has been made, we imagine we’ll start hearing casting rumors.
We look forward to finding out what kind of show Gotham will be, as we can’t imagine they’ll go straight detective, since that’s been done a couple dozen times before.
With Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD premiering last night, we imagine they’ll go for a mix of the comic characters and some solid realism.
