Friday Night Lights alum Gil McKinney has landed the role of Prince Eric in Once Upon a Time season 3. According to Disney, Eric is the Little Mermaid’s one true love.
Once Upon a Time season 3 will introduce Ariel (to be played by Reba star JoAnna Garcia-Swisher), and now the show has found her prince Eric.
TV Line reports that Gil McKinney, best known for his roles as Derek Bishop on Friday Night Lights and John Winchester’s father Henry on Supernatural, has joined the show on a recurring basis.
Both Eric and Ariel will reportedly make their Once Upon a Time debut in season 3, episode 6, which is titled “Ariel.”
While Ariel was seen interacting with Grumpy (Lee Arenberg) in Storybrooke in a teaser released at San Diego Comic-Con, it seems likely that the character will first appear in Neverland, where our main heroes are headed at the beginning of Once Upon a Time season 3.

On the way to confront Peter Pan, we can expect to see Emma (Jennifer Morrison) and Regina (Lana Parrilla) clash as they attempt to work together to rescue their son Henry (Jared Gilmore).
“There will certainly be hurdles to be cleared in order for them to rescue Henry — if they do in fact manage to rescue Henry,” showrunner Adam Horowitz tells TV Line.
This new dynamic will introduce new character alliances, and also new conflicts, as the characters are forced to work together in new ways.
Also on the Jolly Roger are Hook (Colin O’Donoghue), Rumpelstiltskin (Robert Carlyle), Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Charming (Josh Dallas).
Who do you think might form new alliances? And which alliances might break?
Once Upon a Time season 3 premieres Sunday, September 29, airing at 8/7c on ABC. The first episode is titled “The Heart of the Truest Believer.”
