Disney may announce that Benedict Cumberbatch has been cast in Star Wars: Episode VII, if a new report is to be believed.
Cumberbatch’s rumored role in Star Wars: Episode VII is not yet known, but he would be playing a lead character under the direction of J.J. Abrams, according to Film Chronicles. The duo teamed up for Star Trek Into Darkness earlier this year in which Cumberbatch played the lead villain Khan.
Adding fuel to the speculation is the fact that Cumberbatch just dropped out of Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak without any explanation, leading onlookers to believe it was to clear the way for Star Wars. The two projects are scheduled to begin filming around the same time early next year.
Many sites have been sitting on the reported casting but avoided sharing until now because of its size.
Cumberbatch is a big star at the moment. Besides Star Trek, he’s also very well known for his role as Sherlock in the hit BBC drama. He’ll star as the titular dragon later this year in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug for Peter Jackson.
Fans are eager for any and all news about the film because there has been nothing but speculation over the past few months. What do we know? John Williams is scoring the film, and they will be shooting in England. The reported difficulties surrounding the production have lead some to think that the film will be pushed to Christmas 2015.
If/when the announcement is made by Lucasfilm and Disney, we’ll be sure to share it with you.
Star Wars: Episode VII is set to be released in 2015. It joins an already crowded slate of films scheduled for that year.
