Sea of Monsters is now out in theatres, and fans will undoubtedly be wondering if they’ll make a third movie. Here are a few reasons why we think it’d be a good idea.
The Lightning Thief was not received well by fans of Rick Riordan’s book series. Sea of Monsters has fared much better, but there are (as there always will be) complaints that they didn’t get everything just right according to the novel.
With two films in the franchise not becoming overnight blockbuster success stories, is there even a point of making the third book, The Titan’s Curse, into a film?
We think there is.
The second movie had a lot of work to do in order to get everyone to forget about Lightning Thief. They had to introduce characters that should’ve been in the first film, and set up major plot points that would carry on throughout the series (which also should’ve been in the first film).
Titan’s Curse wouldn’t have nearly as many introductions to slug through. Some of the major characters, like Mr. D, Clarisse, and Tyson, would already be established. We would be familiar with their backstories and their various relationships with the other characters.
Titan’s Curse could simply get on with it. There would be less exposition and more plot and action, which would appeal to a much wider audience. Sea of Monsters also left the door wide open for a sequel, allowing an easy transition into the next film and making audiences want to see the next installment called into production.
Sea of Monsters also established the fact that the creators are more than willing to take criticism and turn it into something positive. They’ve listened to the fans’ complaints and taken those suggestions to heart. They’ve improved the sequel, and have shown that they can and will deliver a movie the book fans can enjoy.
While twisted fairy tales and superhero movies are definitely still at their peak, stories about the Greek gods aren’t that far behind. It’s still a good time for something like Titan’s Curse to hit theatres and appeal to people who want to see more of these types of stories.
Considering that the author of the Percy Jackson world is still putting out books in his Heroes of Olympus series, which is related to the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, new fans are discovering the source material all the time. There are still plenty of people who don’t want to let go of Percy Jackson just yet, and those people are growing in number every day.
While Sea of Monsters certainly wasn’t a perfect movie, it was a good start. Fox 2000 Pictures could benefit from a third installment now that fans can see the franchise turning around. With the star power of veteran actors like Stanley Tucci, Nathan Fillion, and Anthony Stewart Head, and the up-and-coming name of Logan Lerman on board, they would do well to keep this franchise afloat.
Titan’s Curse has the ability to become what everyone was hoping The Lightning Thief would be, and it would be a shame to see the franchise sink before it even had a chance to stay above water.
