True Blood star Janina Gavankar moves from one vampire drama to another, landing a role in The Vampire Diaries season 5.

TV Line reports that Janina Gavankar will join The Vampire Diaries in season 5, in what could potentially be a recurring role.

Gavankar will play the beautiful, self-assured and mysterious Tessa, who first arrives in Mystic Falls in season 5, episode 3 hoping to rekindle an old romance.

We already know that this episode will be flashback-heavy, but we don’t yet know which character or time period it will focus on.

Since both Klaus and Elijah have left the series to star on The Originals, Tessa will probably be a former love interest of Damon or Stefan – unless of course this character goes back much further.

Could she somehow be Quetsiyah or Silas’ human lover come to life? That would certainly be an interesting twist!

Gavankar played Luna on True Blood until her character was tragically killed off in the season 6 premiere episode.

She also recurs on The CW’s Arrow, and played Shiva on The League from 2009-2012.

The Vampire Diaries season 5 premieres Thursday, October 3 at 8/7c on The CW. The premiere episode is titled “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” and jumps ahead three months following the season 4 finale.
