A new Monsters University clip debuted this morning, and in it we see Mike and Sulley participating in a class on scaring.
The pair, who aren’t friends at this stage of the storyline, are standing next to one another in “Scaring 101” class taught by Prof. Knight but have differing scare faces. Sulley puts on a pose that the teacher likes. Mike, on the other hand, can’t pull off a frightening look.
In a brief interview with the Wall Street Journal, Monsters University writers Robert L. Baird and Daniel Gerson explained how they developed teaching a scare class.
“We had to spend time thinking back on college courses, literally, what does it mean to teach scaring?” Gerson said.
Added Baird, “We had to deconstruct a scare and say every kid is different and the scare has to be specific to that child and what they’re scared of. And that just opened everything up for us.”
This difference is scaring abilities seems to be one important aspect of the film as we watch Mike and Sulley attempt to form a friendship. Mike spends a good part of the movie trying to discover the person he wants to be. The latest Monsters University trailer puts across that notion.
Monsters University opens June 21. Thanks to WSJ for the video and quotes.
