Hypable

Last night on Syfy, Americans finally got to experience the Merlin series finale. But don’t worry, we’re here to help you handle your Merlin actor withdrawals!

It’s no secret that we here at Hypable are big fans of Merlin, and were very upset about the series’ end last December.

We did our best to help send the show off with a bang, celebrating with a series of articles under the headline Month of Merlin, and doing a full series rewatch on our Talks of Camelot podcast.

But until now, we’ve been able to avoid feeling the loss of the show, because as long as it was still airing in the U.S., it wasn’t really over. Well, Merlin fans, that excuse isn’t going to work anymore.

So what’s next? For the cast and crew, it’s a lot of very exciting new projects! And we couldn’t be happier to see most of the actors and writers finding new work because it means that we still get to watch them do their craft.

Here is our guide to the cast and crew of Merlin, which will hopefully help you in the days and weeks (and let’s face it, months and years) to come.

This article was written by Hypable staff members Selina Wilken and Pamela Gocobachi.

Julian Murphy & Johnny Capps (creators)

Julian Murphy and Johnny CappsAlthough you’ll find that the season 5 finale left fans very divided, there is no question that Capps and Murphy created a wonderful series.

The pair left the Merlin production company Shine, following the end of the show, but the good news is that they’ll still be working together, as executive producers on the new BBC series Atlantis.

Set to take Merlin‘s place on Saturday nights on BBC One this fall, Atlantis follows the young boy, Jason, as he arrives in the mythical and mysterious city of Atlantis.

And, like with Merlin, we all know the story: the famous city will eventually sink into the sea. Will we see that in the show? Probably, yeah. But before that, we have Jason and his friends embarking on what are sure to be epic adventures in a modern retelling of ancient Greek myths.

We’re sure that all Merlin fans will love Atlantis, especially seeing as Capps and Murphy are involved!

Colin Morgan (Merlin)

Colin MorganOf all the former cast members, it’s safe to say Colin Morgan has been one of the most active in securing roles since the end of BBC’s hit fantasy drama.

Since wrapping on Merlin, Morgan has landed a role in BBC’s upcoming mystery drama Quirke, based off of the popular book series by Irish writer John Banville (writing under the pseudonym Benjamin Black).

Quirke, which is set in 1950s Dublin, is set to air sometime next year on the BBC; fans of Morgan can expect to see him in the third episode of the series entitled “Elegy For April” where he will play a local crime reporter who knows more about the mysterious death of a young girl than he lets on.

Fans who are lucky enough to find themselves in London sometime this summer can also catch Morgan at London’s historic Globe Theatre where Morgan is co-starring in the theatre’s stage production of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest.

Katie McGrath (Morgana)

Katie McGrath

Since finishing Merlin, McGrath fans have been able to catch the young actress in the 2012 miniseries Labyrinth, which aired in March in the U.K. and has since been released on DVD. McGrath will also appear on Dates, a Channel 4 drama which airs in June.

Finally, American audiences can look forward to seeing the newly blonde McGrath this fall on the new NBC series Dracula. Here she plays the young, vapid socialite Lucy Westenra, best friend of main female character Mina Murray (Victoria Smurfit). Dracula also stars Jonathan Rhys-Meyers as the title character, and is set in Victorian Era London.

Angel Coulby (Guinevere)

Angel Coulby

Gwen fans almost didn’t have time to miss the actress at all following the end of Merlin, as Coulby was already back on our screens in January. Starring in the period drama Dancing on the Edge, she played the jazz singer, Jessie, and we even got to hear her sing!

Coulby has kept a fairly low profile since then, but don’t worry: she has joined the cast of Sky Atlantic’s The Tunnel, a remake of Scandinavian thriller drama The Bridge set in Britain and France. The cast also includes Clémence Poésy, Stephen Dillane and Joseph Mawle.

Anthony Head (Uther)

Anthony Head

Although we won’t get the chance to see Anthony Stewart Head as the Uther-esque King Clarkson in The Selection, since The CW chose not to pick up the reworked pilot episode, there’s still ample opportunity to watch Head in something besides Buffy rewatches (which, let’s face it, we’ll be doing anyway).

Head will be taking over the role of the centaur Chiron in Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters from Pierce Brosnan, who played the character in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief.

In the second Percy Jackson film, Chiron will most likely only be seen at Camp Half-Blood, but we’ll take it! This kind mentor is much more Giles than Uther, and we can’t wait to see Head put his own twist on the role.

The actor has also recently wrapped up filming for two movies, titled Convenience and Flying Home, both set for release in 2013.

Eoin Macken (Gwaine)

Eoin MackenThough Macken has kept busy since the end of Merlin by working on a few of his own side projects, American fans of the show can look forward to seeing the former Knight of Camelot on their television screens this fall!

Macken will star in NBC’s new medical drama series After Hours where he will portray the role of T.C. Callahan, an ex-army man who comes to work the graveyard shift at a small hospital located in San Antonio, TX after getting discharged.

Tom Hopper (Percival)

Tom HopperTom Hopper is heading out to sea in his first post-Merlin role! The former knight will star in Starz’s upcoming eight part mini series, Black Sails, produced by Transformers director Michael Bay.

The new pirate drama will act as a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic Treasure Island and will follow the tale of the dangerous Captain Flint and his band of pirates.

Hopper will play a pirate named Billy Bones, first mate of The Walrus who becomes caught up in conflict between Captain Flint and his arch nemesis. Though Black Sails is currently being filmed in Cape Town, Africa, fans will unfortunately have to wait until early 2014 to catch this new series on television.

Santiago Cabrera (Lancelot)

Santiago CabreraFans of Santiago Cabrera can rest easy knowing they’ll soon be seeing him in yet another knight-like role! It was recently announced that the former Merlin actor would be starring in the upcoming BBC/BBC America co-production of The Musketeers.

Cabrera will take on the role of Aramis in the upcoming adaption of Alexandre Dumas’ classic tale set during the time of the French Revolution. The Musketeers is currently in pre-production and is set to premiere sometime next year.

Alexander Vlahos (Mordred)

Alex Vlahos

Vlahos has been staying busy since the end of Merlin. In early 2013, he starred in the excellent BBC miniseries Privates, and has since then announced two Kickstarter projects: one for a music video he will be appearing in, and one for a play titled Gardening: For the Unfulfilled and Alienated.

It was recently announced that Vlahos will be appearing as Malcolm in a stage production of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, which sees seasoned British actor Kenneth Branagh in the title role, and Doctor Who actress Alex Kingston as the haunting Lady Macbeth.

Finally, Vlahos has also recorded new episodes of The Confessions of Dorian Gray, the popular BBC radio production, as well as an adaptation of The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Bradley James (Arthur Pendragon)

Bradley James
Since wrapping on the series, Merlin’s Bradley James has kept a fairly low profile. Fans of James, however, can catch him in the recent sports film drama Fast Girls which was released just last year.

Fast Girls follows a group of female runners who dream of going for Olympic gold. In the film, James portrays the team’s physiotherapist and the love interest of main character Shania Andrews (Lenora Crichlow).

As for what’s next for the former King of Camelot, only time will tell, but just like you, we here at Hypable are hoping to hear casting news involving Mr. James sooner rather than later!

Rupert Young (Sir Leon) and Adetomiwa Edun (Sir Elyan)

Like Bradley James, actors Rupert Young and Adetomiwa Edun (who played Sir Leon and Sir Elyan respectively) have both kept a rather low profile since completing the fifth and final season of BBC’s hit fantasy drama.

Fans of Rupert Young can look forward to seeing him guest star in an upcoming episode of the BBC/Starz production of The White Queen. The series will tell the story of women in England fighting to take the throne and rule the country.

Fans of Adetomiwa Edun can expect to see the actor make his film debut sometime next year when he will star in director Anthony Onah’s debut feature Passengers.

That should satisfy and Merlin fan’s actor withdrawals! Of course we’re still waiting to hear what Bradley James is up to, and we wish him and all the other cast and crew good luck on future projects.

  • Merina

I miss this show so much :(

  • Plok

I can’t wait to see Atlantis. It’s also written by the brilliant Howard Overman.

  • Phoebe

I am so ridiculously excited for both Dates and Dracula! Apparently Katie is a natural blond but it still feels so weird seeing her without her dark hair…

  • CColvin

Thank you so much for the updates. I will miss Merlin so much, where did the 5 years go. Loved it from the beginning. Glad they are all getting work, and what is happening with our Gaius, Richard Wilson? You skipped him somehow. Keep up the articles on Merlin and post Merlin.

Yeah I know, I couldn’t find a high quality pic of her with blond hair so I had to look elsewhere… but thanks for the info :)

  • waicman

murphy y capps hacen finales horribles nada QUE ELLOS PRODUZCAN ME INTERESA VER, Para mi que el guion de Merlín se lo robaron a otro creativo por eso no continuaron la linea argumental.

If you live in Sydney or Perth (Australia) you can see Bradley James, Tom Hopper, Rupert Young and Eoin Macken THIS JUNE 2013: http://www.supanova.com.au/news/arthur-knights-table-start-quest-supanova/

Should have stayed with Merlin. They ruined the series with that terrible ending. They got bored or wanted more money. It’s just sad. Great shows get canned, while garbage shows just go on and on.

    • Larry A Stevens II

      Can’t agree more

  • Paviles

While it is true that JM and JC got the chance to enjoy the fantastic series of Merlin, also left us in limbo with incomplete and abrupt end with many loose ends. I do not think they get better production of Merlin.

I just wish that the professional projects of “Colin Morgan”, BJ, KMcG, AC and all the cast, whether international, as fans of Merlin are from many countries.

  • amarwasd

come back please we need you to show us your brilliance again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Penny

I would really like to reach out to Capps/Murphy about a kind of continuation of Merlin. That is when everyone gets done doing what they are doing now. I don’t know if it could be a series, but it sure could be a “Mini-Series”. ( Remember, “He will return
when Albion needs him most”. What better time than WWII.) At the end, when the truck goes by, lets make it a box truck from say WWII. Just after Merlin stops, with the isle in the backround, he continues about 30 yards, and there is a tavern, “The Rising Sun” with the same sign hanging outside as in the show. Merlin walks inside, the bar-keeper is TOM, (Gwen’s father), he is on the telephone. As he hangs up, Merlin hears him say to one of his waitresses, “that was the Colonel. When his men get here, we are to give them what they want, he will pick-up the tab. I’ve called my daughter to see is she can come down and give us an extra hand.” As the door to the tavern opens, Merlin looks to see a couple dozen WWII uniformed men stroll in. The waitresses immediately start bringing over pitchers of beer, and many glasses. After several minutes, the door opens again, Merlin glances up because there is a bell on the door, it is WWII uniforms, 5 Lieutenants, or Captains (I am not familiar with UK military ranking), but there is no mistaking who it is – Lancelot, Gwaine, Leon, Elyan & Percival. As they strode their way up to the bar Merlin can’t & can believe it as he remembers the Dragon’s words. . . . . (Guess who the Colonel is?) the story goes on, but i can’t give it all away.

    I really needed a season
six for everything to be wrapped up promptly! Geez I miss these guys still.

  • Kourt

Omg they should make a season 6 of merlin with the cast. Cause everyone was sad and wanted to see if there is going to be a season 6 but also there has to be because I miss the cast. They should create another movie, or a season with the same actors and actress also one more thing make it like you never seen before.

  • Acegikmo

Thought there was a movie coming up?

  • Merlinandsimsgirl

Anyone wondering what has happened to Bradley? I mean he seems to have fallen off the face of the Earth! Where has he gone? Its been ages since anyone has seen him (On TV or Film).
