Oh, to be a fly on the wall down at the BBC: first John Hurt possibly speaks out of turn about his role in the 50th anniversary special, then The Sun has a set spy divulging 50th anniversary plot details, and now an entire batch of Doctor Who series 7 DVDs have shipped early.

There is sure to be an awful lot of finger pointing going on as to whom is to blame. Regardless, the fact of the matter is that Doctor Who DVDs have shipped early to a number of people who pre-ordered.

Users on Tumblr and at the Gallifrey Base forums are reporting that they received their pre-orderd copies of the second half of Doctor Who season 7 early. Untempered Schism on Tumblr seems to have ordered her copy via BBC America whereas others are reporting Amazon.com as the culprit. There have certainly been “set leaks” before, notably by The Sun, but usually there are only half truths in those rumors. This is the first time in recent memory actual, finished footage is leaking an entire week early.

Spoiler-phobes are probably going to want to avoid looking at Tumblr for the next week, as screen caps are cropping up left and right. For that matter, staying off social media in general might not be a bad idea since you never know where a link is going to lead when one of your mates says, “Have you seen this?” It’s going to become increasingly difficult not to run into anything even by sheer accident.

So far users who have gotten the DVDs early seem pleased by the episode content, and seem to indicate that, as Moffat has hinted, “The Name of the Doctor” sets up the 50th anniversary special beautifully. It has also been verified, as you could surmise from the promos that aired last night, Clara has met the Doctor before and in various time periods.

As if the early release of DVDs wasn’t going to be troubling enough, The Sun apparently has a set spy who has leaked some MAJOR spoilers for the 50th anniversary. Granted, The Sun does have a track record of making up information, but they have also gotten things correct, such as stating the existence of the River Song tombstone that was seen in yesterday’s promo. If you want to learn more, and don’t mind getting possibly, horridly spoiled, you can find information here

Below are non-spoilery screen caps from the early released materials via Untempered Schism on Tumblr.

The new executive producer for Doctor Who, Edward Russell, has addressed the DVD situation on his Twitter account.

Edward Russell doctor who leak statement

Are you a lucky DVD recipient?

  • Matthew Goldenberg

    Oooh, someone’s getting fired tonight.

    • http://www.hypable.com/author/lauracristiano/ LauraBC

There’s a big BAFTA dinner and awards show tonight. Jenna is slated to be there. Can’t wait until someone asks her about this.

    • Blondie98

      That’s exactly what i thought

  • http://ravenclaw1991.tumblr.com/ ravenclaw1991

I will be so mad if I find any spoilers to this. Seriously. I’ll have to blacklist everything Doctor Who related on tumblr for the entire week.

    • http://www.hypable.com/author/lauracristiano/ LauraBC

The thing that worries me is the GIFS. They show up in just a routine search. You can’t always spoiler cut them so people may end up seeing things in a routine search that they don’t want to see.

      • http://ravenclaw1991.tumblr.com/ ravenclaw1991

Didn’t even think of that. Not to mention the people who don’t tag their things at all. I mean, I blacklisted everything imaginable that has to do with One Direction and things still slip past and that’s just a small chunk of my dash. Doctor Who is a large portion, so who knows what’ll slip by. Looks like I’ll be scrolling at a snail’s pace just to make sure I don’t see anything.

      • extermin8or2

I want to watch the whole episode asap-however I really don’t want GIF’s and other spoilers ffs

    • http://twitter.com/CantBanThis CantBanThis

Why? Learning it early doesn’t change the details, and if you hate spoilers you would never watch something more than once.

      • http://ravenclaw1991.tumblr.com/ ravenclaw1991

For the obvious reasons. It would ruin the surprise from when I see it the first time. I don’t want to know what happens until I see the actual episode the first time.

        • http://twitter.com/CantBanThis CantBanThis

IT WOULD BE A SURPRISE EITHER WAY. Unless it’s stupid, in which case it is only “surprising” because it is badly written.

  • Amanda

    Wait, what?

  • jose8180

I swear if I hear any spoliers about the series finale

  • jose8180

I am hearing a lot of backlash pertaining to the apparent 50th anniversery spoiler leaks

    • http://www.hypable.com/author/lauracristiano/ LauraBC

Yeah the question is (without putting specific spoiler content here) how much The Sun got right.

      • jose8180

I can’t wait to hear what your guys thoughts are on whohype

        • http://www.hypable.com/author/lauracristiano/ LauraBC

Yeah unfortunately most of this broke (meaning the DVD release) as and right after we recorded so there isn’t any commentary on this week’s WhoHype, but we’ll totally talk about it in our Google Hangout on Saturday. The 50th spoilers we’ll do on a separate WHoHype this spring/

      • Jack Lee

Even if they got everything right, there’s a huge difference between reading about what happens and watching it unfold.

      • http://twitter.com/AlixEcho AlixEcho

If you’re referring to the recent The Sun article, take it with a huge pinch of salt. Their “sources” for that one were actually posts from the Digital Spy forums, one of which, if I remember correctly, was a scene a member wrote to demonstrate, in a somewhat tongue-in-cheek way, how the John Hurt rumours could be explained away in a few lines in the episode. So, not trustworthy at all, though that’s hardly surprising.

        • http://www.hypable.com/author/lauracristiano/ LauraBC

Exactly! Since it’s actually seen in the promo I feel safe discussing this. The Sun did publish the bit about there being a River Song tombstone back in the summer. So sometimes they get a grain of truth. It’s all down to how much

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002255052909 Remy Quist

No tumblring for me it is!

  • http://www.twitter.com/matsemann08 Matsemann08

    Oh shit!

  • sammylovegood

That is so unfair!! Now I have to completely ignore Tumblr this week >:(

  • http://beware-thewhispermen.tumblr.com/ Kyle

I’ll definitely be on the lookout for the leak but I don’t plan on leaking anything. I hope the rest of the fandom, if they choose to watch it, does the same.

    • http://www.hypable.com/author/lauracristiano/ LauraBC

Yeah I was just describing this to my husband saying. I don’t mind set observation spoilers because it’s all guess work how it totally pans out, what the end CGI will be, total story arc, etc. In short, you still get to use your imagination and nothing is 100% certain. But actually having the fully completed item is like opening your Christmas presents early (which is fine) and then ruining Christmas for me by telling everyone exactly what you got (not so fine).

      • http://beware-thewhispermen.tumblr.com/ Kyle

Here’s hoping that the honor of our fandom can stay in tact. When a TON of people saw Clara in the season premiere at early screenings literally no one had spoiled a thing for the rest of us. If there’s any fandom that can have a leak like this but not spoil it for everyone else, I definitely think it’s the Whovians. *crosses fingers*

        • http://www.hypable.com/author/lauracristiano/ LauraBC

      • PrisonerZero

The fact that you keep brining up opening up Christmas presents early makes me feel guilty, because thats what I did this year. And it turned out to be the David Tennant complete specials on Blu-ray.

  • Amin

I’m waiting for a bluray rip version from pirates!
    I can’t wait a whole week!

    • extermin8or2

if you find a torrent can you link me somehow :p I don’t plan on leaking stuff to people but as I’m meant to be out next sat anyway and I really really really want to see this :p

      • http://www.hypable.com/author/lauracristiano/ LauraBC

For the sake of Hypable not getting in trouble with the BBC if that is what you choose to do take it off site

        • extermin8or2

hence the somehow- i didn’t expect a link on here, for obvious reasons.

        • http://twitter.com/CantBanThis CantBanThis

Well someone doesn’t understand some basics of national and international copyright laws as well as oh why am I bothering

          • http://www.hypable.com/author/lauracristiano/ LauraBC

No I understand them quite well. They can’t sue us, but they can if we willingly leave up links to pirated material leave us off of things like roundtables, phone calls, promotions, etc. In short, they can make it unpleasant and difficult to cover Doctor Who. Studios many a time will leave people off of phoners, not give you choice giveaways, not give you preview copies if turn a blind eye to or abet violations of their copyright.

  • http://twitter.com/AlixEcho AlixEcho

This is incredibly disappointing. One of the best things about TV shows is the speculation and discussion that goes on between episodes, as everyone gets excited for the approach of the episode. This is especially true for a finale, the only opportunity you have, really, to look back at the entire series/season before it concludes. What this whole nonsense has done is destroy that week — it’s going to be impossible to go anywhere to have a genuine discussion without the risk of stumbling across some spoiler.

For me, I now feel as if I’m in an awkward position: either avoid Doctor Who entirely this week to keep from being spoiled or try and get a copy when it appears (which I really, really don’t want to do for a variety of reasons, key among them is this: using LauraBC’s Christmas present analogy, having your presents early before everyone else is fun, but it’s a lot less fun when everyone else is opening theirs on Christmas and you’ve already had yours). I suppose it’s too much to hope for that fans who have it will manage to contain themselves?

  • http://www.facebook.com/dlmarvin05 Dominique Marvin

Doctor Who Offical tweeted that Steven Moffat has promised if fans keep the finale’s secret on the DL that he will release a special video with Matt Smith and David Tennant after the episode airs on TV

    • Kira Hall

At least three people have scrounged up some Doctor Who fans on Twitter and are tweeting spoilers. Including to me. I thought they must just be making things up, but it screamed Moffat. If they are telling the truth, I’m cyber-ripping their heads off for ruining it for me.

      • http://www.facebook.com/dlmarvin05 Dominique Marvin

not really sure if you are saying that you tweeted spoilers or if you found people who were. and also, what screamed moffat?

  • Charlie

I’d heard that The Sun only got its information partially right. John Hurt did make some comments about the 50th anniversary, but apparently The Sun picked up a fan theory based on Hurt’s comments and have published it as fact.

As others have said, the official Doctor Who twitter page has said that if people with the DVD refrain from posting spoilers, they’ll release a special video of Matt Smith and David Tennant.

  • http://twitter.com/delusionaI Elliot McKenzie

It appears this person is the only one to have a physical copy. I smell a publicity stunt.

    • http://www.hypable.com/author/lauracristiano/ LauraBC

BBC would actually have to understand PR to begin with to pull a PR stunt

      • http://www.facebook.com/chiry23 Ryan Nolan

Touche. Rule #1 in PR: Never get involved in a land war in Asia. Rule #2: Don’t ignore and slight everyone who has made Doctor Who the show it is today when planning your 50th Anniversary.

  • http://www.facebook.com/alexmvaughn Alexander Marcus Vaughn

Ok so when Moffat says he will release a special video at the end of the episode couldn’t it just be the trailer for the 50th anniversary episode? They do that for every episode so I don’t think it will be that special

  • Juliana

Ok so I don’t actually mind spoilers that much and considering these spoilers from The Sun might not even be accurate, I did go to check them out. The only thing I will say about it is that people HAVE to stop freaking out. They don’t even know if any of this is true and they are already organizing to lynch poor Moffat. I’m sorry but I’m kind of new to this fandom and before I was under the impression that they were a much more laid back group but now I’m finding out that pretty much anywhere but here on Hypable they are terribly rude :(

  • PrisonerZero

I’m in a state where I don’t want any spoilers for the season finale, but I also want to search the internet for the uploaded video of it

    • Dana Alley

      I can relate…
