Here’s a surprise, and one that surely would’ve brought out the ratings that Fox is so desperately searching for: A report tonight indicates that American Idol producers attempted to take out Mariah Carey mid-season.
American Idol’s plan was to take out Carey and replace her with previous judge and artist Jennifer Lopez. The plan fell apart, however, when Carey’s lawyers threatened a lawsuit.
Word came down via The Hollywood Reporter. They say that even though the mid-season shake up didn’t go according to plan, Idol producers and execs “are negotiating with Lopez […] to appear on the show’s finale in May. And insiders say a search already has begun to replace Carey, most likely Nicki Minaj and possibly the entire judge’s panel for next season.”
As noted in their article, American Idol’s ratings are at their worst point since the show’s inception in 2001. Just last week a repeat of The Big Bang Theory beat a new episode of the once-dominant Idol. Meanwhile, NBC’s The Voice continues to surge, scoring higher and higher ratings over the past year.
For what it’s worth, one Idol producer denies any involvement in these recent Mariah Carey-Jennifer Lopez talks. “I have not been included in any conversation regarding replacing Mariah with Jen this season,” said Nigel Lythgoe.
Do you think Lopez could bring back viewers? Or would viewers tune in only to see how the show would handle Carey’s sudden dismissal? We would definitely dune in to watch host Ryan Seacrest play down the hype.
