Glee and StarKid heartthrob Darren Criss will announce an album and tour next week, Hypable has learned.

A source tell us that Criss will release an album in May or June of this year and embark on a month long tour around that same time.

Earlier today the singer and actor encouraged fans on Twitter to sign up for a mailing list where he’ll be making a “big announcement” sometime next week.

Darren Criss album tease

Following this message from Criss, fans noticed that an empty Tour Date page appeared on his site. It was later removed.

Criss seems to be playing up the “Listen Up” phrase. Not only is it in the graphic, but he used it as a hashtag. Could it be the album title?

We’ll pass along his announcement when it’s made official next week.

For now: What do you expect to hear on the album? A lot of acoustic, which Criss is known for? Top 40, full-band material? A new musical entirely (kidding)? And how long will it take for one of his original songs to appear on Glee?

Criss isn’t the only Glee star to embark on a journey to create his own album. Lea Michele has been vocal about working on an original album in recent months.

In related Criss news, we learned over the weekend that Glee has a major plan in store for his character Blaine in the season 4 finale (spoiler warning).

Remember when I was stoned to death for writing this: http://www.hypable.com/2012/04/20/column-5-reasons-darren-criss-solo-album-should-be-a-dance-record/

I’ve come a long way, Darren fans. :)

  • Lucy

I want his acoustic music! But anything would be fine from Darren :-)

  • http://twitter.com/tirpse_ Nadine

Gotta love how you don’t wait for Darren to announce it first. You obviously saw that he wants to. I thought you were more professional than that…

    • http://twitter.com/IrishMike15 Mike

Is it really a big deal? It’s a news scoop, Hypable is not the only one reporting it and not all Darren Criss fans read this site. It’s still a big surprise for a lot.

    • sarahd15

I would’ve loved an official announcement from him too, but I’m sure he knew the moment he posted that he had a big announcement for next week with the hash tag #ListenUp (possibly the album title), that many people would speculate that he would be announcing his new album and tour. He already stated he would release an album this year, so yeah it makes sense to assume that is his announcement.

      • felicia

speculation is different from all these media sites preempting his announcement, though. we’ve all been speculating his album coming out for months; it’s completely different.

        • sarahd15

No it’s not really different. It’s the media, it’s what they do. It is just to be expected, and I am not defending them, I’m just saying that this isn’t the first time and it won’t be the last time. Everyone wants to jump on popular stories like this asap. Again, yeah it sucks Darren himself didn’t announce it officially, but what he should have done is not said a single thing until he was 100% ready to do so. Believe me, I am a hardcore serious Darren fan, waaaay before Glee. I’m a true StarKid, so yeah my love for him is very strong! But you gotta be somewhat realistic when it comes to our society/media.

          • felicia

realistically, I expect reputable news sources to wait until they are given the go-ahead to release news. and since darren said the announcement was coming next week, I assume permission wasn’t given for the news to leak yet

          • sarahd15

That is entirely unrealistic! Many news sources post things before they are given a formal “go-ahead” by anyone. That is the reality of it. If someone had hacked into Darren’s personal accounts, etc, then yes that would be something to get very upset about being leaked. That is not the case here. Our expectations as fans who respect him as a person and an artist is not the same as the reality of our media. It’s fine to be annoyed by it, but you need to be reasonable enough to understand that the media rarely respects things like common courtesy, etc. They just want a juicy popular story.

          • felicia

I need to be reasonable about the sites I visit not respecting common courtesy? Why is the burden of respect on me as an individual and not the news sites? That makes no sense at all.

I don’t actually want to argue about this. I’m just annoyed as all hell that the excitement I had earlier today to have a big announcement to look forward to was ruined by other sites and I don’t think that’s unreasonable.

          • sarahd15

I’m not trying to argue with you, because like I said, I wanted to hear from Darren too. I’m trying to get you to realize that our media has always and will always be like this. They do it every single day, it’s what reporters do. They hunt for stories. For example, was it common courtesy for them to blow up the Kristen Stewart cheating scandal, forcing the parties to admit to it to their love ones publicly? Absolutely not, but that is what they do. They want a good story. I’m pretty sure you know this for a fact, and reasonably so you’re just upset about this occurrence because it’s about Darren. Again, I’m annoyed too, but I’m trying to look at it by the way it is. The media does it to everyone with any kind of story. Either way, we are getting new songs and a tour from Darren, that is what should be focused on, rather than how we came about to know the news. Fandom sites literally live on letting people know first what is going on, because many people welcome that kind of passion to deliver top notch stories.

If they were respectful decent humans, they would’ve waited. But heck, they are journalists. It is their lot in life.

    • Ev42

The thing is, Hypable actually wasn’t going to post anything until after the official announcement. But then another big site leaked it, making it publicly available information and *news*, which changed the situation. Like, it was already out there on a big platform when Hypable posted this. So yeah. Hypable doesn’t do leaks, not like that – the ethical approach to reporting is one of the things I respect the most about this site – but once it’s out, it’s out, and Hypable has to keep up with that.

  • Paige

Would’ve been nice if you and other “reputable” fan news sites (ahem, PopWrapped) would’ve waited until Darren actually announced this. You know, next week. Way to spoil the surprise for him.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Josselin-Casarrubias/1352777988 Josselin Casarrubias

are you calling popwrapped reputable ja

      • Paige Turner

        No. Hence the quotes.

    • Ev42

Hypable can’t wait once the news is publicly available, though. I personally am very upset with PopWrapped (who were the ones to leak & imo made a very immoral decision when they did, unlike Hypable who had the information but were going to wait for the official announcement), but once it’s out like that, it’s kind of Hypable’s job to write about it. It sucks, but there it is.

^ everyone pissed off at Hypable need to read this.

  • http://www.facebook.com/amber.carney3 Amber Carney

I don’t even care that this kinda ruins the surprise, I’m so excited it doesn’t even matter! Can wait for the official announcement! :)

  • Kavitha

I’m sooo excited, like bouncing off the walls excited. But, I do agree with the others, I think he wanted it to be a surprise.

  • A concerned fan

Hey jerk…um, the whole point is that DARREN is gonna announce this NEXT WEEK! You are quite the douche-canoe for posting this…

  • Annie

This is going to be amazing!!!! I can’t wait!!!! And by the way, technically Darren did announce this already, it’s on his facebook page.

  • http://twitter.com/fluflu44 Mandy Brennan

I wonder if he’s headlining, or if he’s going to be opening up for someone? With that said, is it possible he’s going to tour with Hanson? To my knowledge they haven’t announced who is opening up for them and the fact that Darren just happened to sing with them recently makes me wonder…

I think I would die if this would happen….but that’s just me dreaming. Either way, I can’t wait!

    • sarahd15

      That would be so amazing!

    • hannah

I have been questioning that as well… We can always hope right :)

  • sarahd15

Omg, finally! He is such a talented songwriter/singer!!! I’m beyond excited for my FAVORITE StarKid! This is totally awesome!!

  • Mel

They didn’t really ruin this piece of news. Everything should always be considered rumor and speculation until officially announced. So, assume it’s a rumor for now and he’ll OFFICIALLY announce it next week.
P.S. I’m going nuts right now in excitement over this!!!!! :D

  • Bee

Such a shame that Darren didn’t get to tell us himself. This is pretty rude. I bet he was excited

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=646947665 Megan Slife

I think everyone should lay off Hypable for posting this and just enjoy the fact that we’re getting a Darren Criss album. ELE!

  • brit

It would be sooo Darren if it had nothing to do with a tour or an album… I can hear him laugh….. maybe a Broadway show with Starkid…I KNOW i SHOULD .stop dreaming….. :)
