Giving us a bit of a shocker on Twitter today, John Barrowman has made an official statement concerning his involvement in the 50th Anniversary Special for Doctor Who.

The fandom has been clamoring for Captain Jack to return to Doctor Who since he left, and we’ve been hoping that the chances will be greater for the 50th anniversary of the show, which will involve many character comebacks and reprised roles. Now John Barrowman himself has given the official confirmation that he will not be involved with the 50th Anniversary Special.

Cue outraged fans and sobs of fangirls and fanboys alike. Captain Jack is one of the most beloved characters to have appeared on Doctor Who, and to get confirmation that he will in no way be a part of the 50th Anniversary Special is one of the most disappointing things we’ve learned about the special so far.

Barrowman has been in the dark for most of the year as to whether or not Captain Jack will be a part of the special, and then in an interview with UK TV’s This Morning, he said that they were ‘discussing things.’ He later backtracked on his Twitter account to calm the waves of fandom and said he didn’t know in what capacity or medium it will be in, and sadly those discussions seemed to have ended with a very clear decision by the BBC to not include Captain Jack in the 50th Anniversary at all.

Although Barrowman is currently contracted with the CW show Arrow, he’s made agreements with the network so that if offered a reprising role in Doctor Who, he will be given the time he needs to do it. Being such an open fan of the series, we’re sure he’s just as devastated as we are, but we hope that he will come back to the series at some point in the future at least.

Will you miss Captain Jack in the 50th Anniversary Special?

  • ravenclaw1991

This disappoints me greatly. How can we have the 50th anniversary without Captain Sexy, I mean Jack? I’m hoping its some kind of thing to throw us off.

  • Gary65

So long as he returns at some point in the series, I don’t mind. There are quite a few other DW characters I would want to see again before Jack, some of whom with epic enough stories to warrant 50th anniversary involvement(*cough*Donna*cough*)

    Worst decision ever!!!!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Rachel-Whelen/514317641 Rachel Whelen

My wishful thinking read this will return, then I realized my mistake and felt sad.

  • Glaciusx

This is so disappointing. If Moffat isn’t including anyone before his run (Nu Who), then I hope to god he is including people from Classic Who otherwise this 50th anniversary special is going to suck. After all, cameos are what make these things great, special, and memorable.

  • Amanda

This is so depressing. I wanted Jack back more than anyone…and it’s so easy. I mean, he doesn’t die, barely ages. He can be at any point in time, just waiting for the Doctor.

    • Glaciusx

Plus, we all know John Barrowman would do it in an instant. I see no reason NOT to include him!

      • Amanda

For sure. Barrowman seems like the type of fan that would miss the birth of his own child to get back to Doctor Who

  • Katiedora

Seeing Captain Jack come back at least once in Who is all I really want, and it was literally the only thing I cared about having in the special. Now I’m just kind of meh about it. I’m sure it’ll be big and awesome and flashy like Moffat likes, but I do wish this had happened.

  • PhoenixTsukino

I am definitely sad that Captain Jack will not be in the 50th anniversary since he is, to this day, my absolute favorite of all the companions. I hope then that the only companion who will be in the special is Clara – and maybe River Song – because I feel that either you give a spotlight to all the companions available or just the current one. It wouldn’t feel right to me to have say Rose and Martha make a return but not Captain Jack, Donna, and Amy – you know what I mean? The 50th can still work with just Clara and River. I just pray that Captain Jack makes a return to meet the 11th Doctor at some point – another 3 episode story arc would be lovely and make up for him not being in the 50th anniversary special.

    • Sam

You may be on the way they’re thinking. I hate that Jack isn’t coming back, but I’m guessing they feel the need to trim down returning stars somewhere, and its easier to cut out a guest companion than a Doctor. Still majorly stinks of course, just trying to reason why they would make such a weird decision.

      • screwyoumoffat

I’d give River back for Jack in an instant if I had the option…

      • PhoenixTsukino

Yeah after a while there would a ton. lol Maybe the story they have planned doesn’t fit for Captain Jack or maybe John’s secretly working on something and it conflicted with filming the 50th anniversary? I’d like to know but we probably won’t get an answer until after it airs.

  • Liderc

I wonder what’s up and why he won’t take part. Seems like it would be a great opportunity.

    • http://forgiveyourmind.tumblr.com/ Tariq

I don’t think it’s his choice. If it was then he’d be in it the second they announced a 50th Anniversary Special!

  • spacie19

What exactly is Moffat’s beef with folks from that era?

    • Glaciusx

Right? I want to ask him the same thing. I hate how he acts like his run is the only one that matters. I like him but he seriously needs to stop.

    • http://www.hypable.com/author/lauracristiano/ LauraBC

The irony is that Moffat created the character of Captain Jack. the Empty Child was the first episode for Who written by Moffat

    • http://twitter.com/MowTheFrontLawn Juan Pedia

He doesn’t have a beef with folks from the RTD era. Captain Jack was supposed to be in Season 6′s “A Good Man Goes to War,” but John Barrowman wasn’t available to film it.
Images of Rose, Martha, and Donna have been shown in both Seasons 5 and Season 6. And Rose and Captain Jack were both mentioned by name in Season 6′s “The Wedding of River Song.”

Well my intrest in this anniversary just dropped 10%, maybe enough outcry from fans will make Moffat change his mind.

  • Helen

tears tears tears. I would take Jack Harkness in the 50th anniversary over 3D any day. Seriously, does anyone actually watch tv in 3D? (not movies)

    • Amanda

      Not me. I barely watch it in HD. I just want Jack ;-;

  • Ella Ricker

I’m hoping that his specific wording of “50th Anniversary Episode” will mean that he will return for the festivities in some other way, just not as a part in the episode. Sure it’s sad that he won’t be there for the episode, but let’s just hope he isn’t completely out of the picture for the whole celebration!

This is the worst! Between how terrible the last season of Torchwood was and how god-awful Arrow is, I really needed JB to redeem himself! Terrible decision on the part of the Doctor Who team, as I know he would never turn down an offer to return as Captain Jack. So so so disappointed.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=595476887 Kezza Hebberley

Really? You think Arrow is ”god-awful”? I love it! With or without JB in it, the first season has been brilliant and the show already has a huge fanbase. :)

      • http://blackrapture.tumblr.com/ thegoodshipdestiel

I honestly do think it’s terrible! As far as source material, Arrow’s Oliver Queen is a far cry from the DC Green Arrow. While Justin Hartley’s interpretation on Smallville wasn’t perfect, I much preferred it to Stephen Amell’s lifeless portrayal. He has zero charisma and watching him bores me to death. I felt the same way when I saw him in Hung. Not to mention that the dialogue is so cringeworthy I often feel embarassed for the actors having to say it. They have just missed the mark for me on capturing the magic of Smallville. When you are dealing with this kind of premise, you have to kind of go with how silly it is. Movies like The Avengers and shows like Buffy embrace that it is all a little ridiculous and that’s why they work. Arrow has taken the whole business too serious from the start and it is falling on its face for me. But, that’s just my opinion of course. I’m still hanging in there and watching to see what Alex Kingston does but I’m not sure I’ll be able to continue after this season.

I think he is deceiving the fans…

    We need Captain Jack though.

  • http://twitter.com/CGuyOne Claudio Catino

So much for the 50th Anniversary. I don’t care about Trenzalore or the Fall of the Eleventh, just bring Jack back!

  • WhoKid152

  • Angela

This has made me about 45% less excited about the 50th anniversary.

  • http://twitter.com/SofMarie93 Sofia Thomas

Maybe he’s lying and he really is involved but can’t say that he is?

  • http://twitter.com/shadowofrazia Dominique Canning

No! I really wanted him to be part of it! Excuse me while I weep. :(

  • http://www.facebook.com/erin.yanas Erin Yanas

What did I do to deserve this? First my favorite band breaks up and then I get this news. I don’t know what I did.

NNNNNNOOOOOOOO! I love me some captain jack!

  • grapes9h5

I hope this is either a deliberate lie to mislead fans and keep expectations in check, or a negotiation tactic by Barrowman to show the BBC just how much the fans care about his character (how that could ever be doubted to begin with is insane).

If not…… man what a sad day this is for Whodom

They are crazy not to ask JB back! What are they thinking? I thought Moffat was cleverer than that!

  • Izzy

Yesh, <3 I love Jack and he one of the greatest of all </3
