Glee’s Naya Rivera recently spoke about the creative changes that have come to Glee in season 4 saying that it feels like a different show to her. Plus, a couple of other subtle throws of shade.

Speaking to Vulture.com, Naya talked about how even though she comes to the same studio to work on Glee, there’s a huge feeling of separation with the cast and it makes her sad:

It does feel like a different show and sometimes I get really sad about it. We shoot on the same soundstage, but there’s this big door that separates the two worlds, so on my lunch breaks I’ll go over there and see [Kevin McHale] and [Jenna Ushkowitz] and everybody I haven’t seen, like, “I miss you guys! What are you doing?” I have no idea what they’re doing! I have no idea about the gossip and drama with the new kids! I feel like I’ve really grown up because we used to have all that stuff and now we don’t.

Naya also spoke about how she and Lea Michele sometimes get jealous of the cast working on the McKinley High School set because they’ve recently been able to close episodes by just flailing around and having fun on stage – something she nor Lea have ever had a chance to do:

It’s funny because Lea and I have been getting insanely jealous of the new New Directions because at the end of every episode they get to do a fun number where they just, like, run around. Like, free-form rock-out! We never got to do that!

Well, when we were in New Directions we had like six-hour dance rehearsals. It was very rigid. Now they’re literally just running around with balloons. [Laughs.]

So much shade – and we love it!

Completely understandable for Naya and Lea Michele to feel that way. It is a different show, with a different dynamic now. But that isn’t bad. It’s good that the show made the characters graduate like they should have. What I don’t like? Finn taking over Glee club. I know that’s the way they are doing it so he is in the show, but no school district would ever allow that. It’s ridiculous. He does interact with the students well (probably because he was one of them a few months ago). I’d just like to see him move forward with his life, like everyone else.

Finn isnt a teacher and he didnt take over Glee club he was sitting in for Will while he was away and they addressed that early in the season when Sue tried to veto that decision… atleast Finn finally knows what he wants to do, now he’ll go to school to become a teacher…

My deepest sympathies to any poor fictional child who gets stick with him as a teacher in the future

I’m a new high school teacher, and before I taught I was hired (for pay, with a contract) by my public school district to lead the theater program. I also had a friend who was ski coach and another who was a cheer coach, both in different districts than mine. It is common to hire non-high school student adults over 18 to lead or coach clubs.

I was hoping for those kind of group performances at the end of every episode with the old cast so at least I’m getting that with the new New Directions. I’m sad with Naya though how the originals never really did that but oh well. However, season 4 is my everything right now.

Those end-of-the-episode numbers used to be amazing! I used to love when they all came together and the combination of all their voices sounded amazing and they would do a stunning performance of a classic song. (Remember ‘Somebody to Love?’ One of the best songs ever covered by Glee!) Now it’s just like 30 seconds of them screwing up a song and jumping around. Yawn.

Pretty awkward, in my opinion. You obviously don’t feel sad enough about it to not continue being on it and getting paid a lot of money. I wish that they would just cut the cord with the old cast and move on with the new New Directions. No one will ever warm up to the new characters when we are constantly jumping back to the old characters who have storylines that are completely separate from the Glee Club. All the shoe-horning them into situations just to make them relevant is not my cup of tea.

She has a multi-season contract to honor. You can’t break that without paying the studio a HUGE chunk of change. Plus, a girl’s gotta eat. I’m sure she appreciate the show launching her career but she can still tactfully criticize it if she wants to.

I just think it’s in poor taste, personally. Reminds me of how Katherine Heigl badmouthed Grey’s Anatomy at the end. It makes her look extremely ungrateful.

        • Marie

She’s not bad-mouthing them. It’s an adjustment for her, that’s all. She can be sad about it being different, but she’s saying she’s still enjoying it.

Can we just have a Rachel Berry show? Literally, I have no interest in the new kids and never will. They’re boring and stupid. Kitty is the only interesting one because she’s a bitch. I thought I was going to like Marley, but she is so stupid. I can’t even stand it. And then Ryder and the new Puck are just blah. Maybe it’s the chemistry between the cast. Idk. I do love Unique! So I take back that Kitty is the only interesting one. And I love Blaine, but I don’t count him as one of the new kids, so yeah.
