Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy has been shrouded in secrecy, other than actor Chris Pratt joining as the lead, and director James Gunn says he hopes to keep it that way for future details.

Gunn has apparently been active on the social media and question/answer website Formspring for a while now and although he was fairly mum on specific details, he had a few things he wanted to discuss about the film.

He revealed that Guardians will take place outside of our Milky Way galaxy, but that the story itself will still be rooted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that so many are familiar with. The Avenger’s brought us aliens from another universe, so we aren’t surprised to hear that the future of Marvel is to move away from planet Earth and even our own solar system with their storytelling. This in essence gives them the leeway needed to take films like Guardians of the Galaxy and make them more believable by not having aliens continually attack Earth and expect the audience to simply go along with the idea that Earth is simply unlucky, and keeps getting bombarded by alien attacks.

James Gunn goes on to say that while he won’t be sharing much more about the film, as he wants to retain some secrecy, he does want to make sure fans aren’t constantly questioning rumors about casting and the film’s plot. Gunn says:

“We have lots of surprises in store for you guys, but we can’t let them out for a while. That said, don’t believe everything you read! I am shrouding myself in secrecy for the time being so your enjoyment of ‘GotG’ will be fully realized as we release the details little by little. TRUST ME.”

He did mention that the film’s casting will be mostly based out of England where production is located, which means we may be seeing some unknowns in the 2014 film. There’s only one confirmed member of the cast so far, as we mentioned above, but there’s also been rumors that Game of Thrones’ Jason Momoa has tested for the character Drax the Destroyer. Reports are saying that Marvel Studios has yet to offer him the part, but it looks like he may be a favorite for the role despite rumors that he wants more cash than they’re willing to give.

There have been rumors that Tony Stark (Iron Man) may be headed into space at the end of Iron Man 3 in his new “space armor,” which if true could mean that Guardians could be the film featured in the film’s after-credits scene. We should know more once Iron Man 3 hits theaters May 3.

Guardians of the Galaxy follows a futuristic, alien superhero team protecting the galaxy from evil, led by Peter Quill. The team first appeared in Marvel comics in 1969, but wasn’t given their own series until the 1990s. Check out our latest news on Guardians of the Galaxy, as the film will hit theaters August 1, 2014.

Estimated release date is actually after Avengers 2 I believe. Primarily because next year will be the Hulk movie and Captain American and they only do 2 Marvel movies a year. Avengers 2 should come out May 2015 and Guardians of the Galaxy November 2015. Although now that I think about it, Hulk and Guardians may be switched…..hmmm. Now I have to go digging.
