Hypable

In one of the many articles Hypable has published about the new Star Wars movie, it said it was probably the second biggest franchise there is. I saw a lot of comments discussing this statement so I thought it would be fair to compare the two biggest franchises there are. I think we can all agree they are Star Wars and Harry Potter.

Now, choosing which one is the biggest is almost impossible, but here are some facts and thoughts for you to decide which franchise is number one.

Box Office Gross

If we look just at the film’s box office gross, Harry Potter emerges as the clear winner. With eight films, it has grossed $7,706,147,978 (average per movie: $963,268,497) and it’s currently the highest grossing film franchise. It even beats the combined gross of 25 James Bond movies combined, even though Skyfall alone grossed over a billion dollars.

Star Wars is the third highest grossing franchise after the Boy Who Lived and 007. With seven films (counting The Clone Wars) it has grossed $4,382,359,868 for an average per film of $626,051,410. However, half of these movies came out over 30 years ago and the grosses are not adjusted for inflation. In fact, Star Wars: Episode IV is the third highest grossing movie of all time adjusted for inflation, just after Gone with the Wind and Avatar.

With Episodes VII, VIII & IX on the way plus some stand-alone movies, Star Wars will probably beat the Chosen One in a few years. But for now, Potter is the winner.

Cultural Impact

This can’t be measured in numbers and facts but it’s both franchises’ most powerful aspect. When Star Wars first came out in 1977 it shook the world and changed pop culture and cinema forever. It inspired generations of people to become filmmakers giving us fan-favorites like Joss Whedon and J.J. Abrams. It also confirmed what Jaws had suggested two years prior and changed Hollywood forever. Now they wanted blockbusters! Before Spielberg and Lucas, studios made many original movies that now would only be developed as indie movies. But Jaws and Star Wars made so much money that sequels and franchises were born. Star Wars inspired a generation and changed the way studios made movies forever.

It also influenced how merchandising ties in with movies in a huge manner. When you walk into a Disney Store and it’s full of Avengers stuff, it’s partly due to the box office behemoth of 1977.

Now, Harry Potter has a lot of arguments in this field, too. The mere amount of books sold is proof of it. Over 450 million copies have been sold all over the world and have been translated to over 67 languages. It inspired whole generations of kids to read (including me). In fact, kids didn’t go to school the day Prisoner of Azkaban was going to be released and that’s why all other release parties were held on Saturdays. These parties also started being popular with Harry. J.K. Rowling is one of the few celebrity authors and most of the others owe it to her.

Harry also had the advantage of coming out when the Internet was starting. Fandoms truly found their place online, with sites like The Leaky Cauldron and MuggleNet being the most prominent ones. These fansites also achieved something that was unthinkable before: to be treated as press. The reason Hypable can attend premieres and screenings and can interview authors and directors is in part due to the Potter fansites and the result of the Potter Wars with WB (if you want to know more about this and the fascinating history of the Potter fandom, I recommend Melissa Anelli’s Harry, A History).

So both franchises have had a huge impact and I can’t really decide if one trumps the other in this category. It’s a tie for me.

Legacy

After Return of the Jedi came out, Lucas said he was done. This was in 1983. But Star Wars fans never stopped loving the movies. The Extended Universe was born and still today, thousands and thousand of books and short stories continue to come out each year.

Another trilogy of movies came and another one is on the way. Star Wars is apparently something that will never stop thrilling adults and children everywhere. It’s been 36 years since Episode IV came out and yet Star Wars is always present in headlines, forums and fansites. Even more so now with the new trilogy looming so close.

Harry Potter, on the other hand, only ‘ended’ two years ago if you think of the movie franchise, and six years ago, book-wise. It’s still strong, producing theme parks and fans that still love the series intensely. Fanfic found a home on the Internet and many stories are still published by fans from all over the world.

The press and publishing companies are always looking for ‘the next Harry Potter‘ and YA novels are now what sells best. I really doubt Twilight or The Hunger Games would have been so successful without Harry preceding the way.

In this aspect, I think Star Wars edges out Harry. We’ll have to see if the story of the Boy Who Lived will stay as prominent during the years as Star Wars has. I think it will, but Star Wars wins this one.

Now, I haven’t talked about characters (two of the best villains ever, for example), the intensity and dedication of the fandoms themselves, games, etc. The Harry Potter brand was worth $15 billion two years ago. I don’t know how much Star Wars is worth right now but it cost Disney $4 billion to acquire it, along with all of LucasFilm, Skywalker Sound and ILM… I could keep coming up with ways to compare these two huge worlds that I love.

Which one is the biggest for you? Is it Star Wars or Harry Potter?

I think it’s star wars in the US, but definetly potter worldwide

  • Emily

Not to mention Star Wars has made about $33 billion in total. Mainly merchandise, specifically toys ($15 billion) but along with box office, DVDs, video games, etc. Definitly, by the numbers, the biggest franchise ever.

    • TheHamburglar

This. The plastic lightsabers are still the best toy ever created.

    • Gary65

Hardly a fair comparison, considering that Star Wars has had an extra 30 years of sales. Give Harry Potter another 15 years and another theme park and it’ll leave Star Wars in its dust.

      • Emily

Though it is correct Star Wars is older and had more time… in my opinion I think the Harry Potter franchise should have put more out there as of merchandising. Star Wars has a TON of copyrighted toys and board games and licensing in general. Star Wars has had a TV show, 130 video games and there are so many characters in the movies that are popular as action figures and that are on bed spreads and what not. I think the difference is, Harry Potter came from a book series and it would be a terrible idea to simply add things to the movies that could make more toys, etc. While in Star Wars, it is known that characters were created with merchandizing in mind. If any franchise would beat Star Wars, looking at numbers it is a good chance it is the Cars/Cars 2 franchise. Cars 2 is wildly known to been made solely of the purpose of creating new characters for merchandizing and has already made about $10 billion and is not as old as either Star Wars or Harry Potter. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge Harry Potter fan, much more than Star Wars, but Harry Potter probably won’t become globally the number one franchise. at least the way it is looking now.

        • Gary65

That’s a good thing though, isn’t it? It shows that a product can still compete without selling itself & merchandising every little thing going. I like that they won’t merchandise something that doesn’t add to the HP experience. If anything, it makes HP’s lead even more impressive. It’s winning, despite that.

          • Emily

I’m just talking about money. Star Wars has made the most money making it the most successful franchise. Certainly Harry Potter is up there with Star Wars… I think deciding who is in lead, when not only counting the money, it is up to opinion.

  • ravenclaw1991

Personally, I’m biased so I have to say Harry Potter. I’ve never seen Star Wars and I know little to nothing about it. I know its huge, but I’ve never really paid attention to how huge. I know Harry Potter is huge.

  • Daughter of Eve

As much as I love HP, I have to say Star Wars is bigger and more evident as part of pop culture, though Potter isn’t too far behind.

Star Wars has been around longer, so it’s got more of a presence, though Potter isn’t far behind is what I am saying.

  • http://twitter.com/ivangatewood Ivan Gatewood

Star Wars is a mess, it’s not even the best sci fi franchise out there. Definitely Potter.

  • upper_westsider

    It’s Harry Potter for me!

  • Jessica

Yeah, it’s definitely Star Wars. When calculating box office numbers inflation really should be taken into account. The Star War movies are older and therefore tickets were less expensive, causing the overall gross to be less comparatively. But like someone else said, when you include merchandise and the cartoon spinoffs, Star Wars is the clear winner. And I’d say on cultural impact as well. More people know what a storm trooper is than a death eater. Maybe for our generation Harry Potter is more relevant, but overall Star Wars has had a much larger impact financially and culturally.

  • charlton

Star Wars ,everybody has heard of the “Jedi Mind trick”.Whereas not as many people know what a “Muggle” is.

Potter is quite contemporary for me..where as Star Wars is more of a classic…having said that I grew up with Potter, not with Star Wars so for me the impact it had on me was greater..BUT I think Star Wars just might be bigger!

  • http://twitter.com/noesunacuenta Braulio is :O

Bigger: Star Wars. (Has 20 years more than HP)
Better: Personal taste, mine is Harry Potter

  • Erika

I am such a huge Harry Potter fan, but I think Star Wars is the bigger franchise.

  • gcw07

Star Wars is probably bigger worldwide then pretty much any other series. Not to say I even like SW, but still a bigger franchise with a ton of history. Only thing that matches that for me at least is James Bond. Still personally like the HP movies better, but that doesn’t make it a larger or more important franchise.

  • Carilyn

Well, I think this is hard to call. As said in the article, Harry’s only been gone two years, and has been around maybe 13. Meanwhile, two whole generations (those who were young during the originals and those who were young during the sequels, myself included) have already grown up with Star Wars, and a lot of it has had time to sink into pop culture in a way Harry hasn’t yet. The oldest possible children of those who were kids when they first read the books would probably only just be getting into them now, maybe not even that. I think we should wait another ten years at least before judging franchise size, but this is a good start.

  • Cora

For me, I’d say HP is way bigger for the younger generation, but is more popular with a slightly older generation. That being said, I’d say they’re pretty equal. It’s hard to judge since Star Wars has been around a lot longer, so more time to see it’s impact on pop culture, it’s references used in television, etc. But at the same time, the use of HP references in popular television these days is very high. Many people recognize the tune of Hedwig’s theme almost as well as the Star Wars theme. Harry Potter is more popular in a different way because it’s aimed at a younger group (teens), but many children have grown up with Potter. The books have an enormous fanbase that Star Wars can’t compare with. If it were movies vs movies, Star Wars, I think, would be the winner. But if we’re talking fan bases on a whole, I’d say it’s pretty equal, but there is a cultural difference and an age difference with fans. Star Wars is more popular in American than it is worldwide, whereas HP is much more popular in Europe than in America. It’s very hard to say, because the fan bases are very different. Overall, I’d say it’s a pretty equal playing field, but either way both bases have fanatic and devoted fans, and it’s really lovely to see.

  • Gary65

Potter without a shadow of a doubt. The only area where Star Wars edges out HP is in the soundtrack.

  • Matthew Goldenberg

Although I’d like to say Harry Potter, Star Wars bridges several different mediums and comes out with new content all the time with television shows, comics, books, short stories, video games, sections of theme parks, overpriced merchandise (not that Potter doesn’t have that too), and now, several new films. Not only that, but Star Wars also has the advantage of spanning several generations. As much as I love Harry Potter, I really think Star Wars has to take the cake on this one. Plus, Ewoks are freaking adorable.

  • Ada

I love Star Wars but I’ll have to say Harry Potter. The books are just bigger than any of the Star wars movie.

    • oblyviate

Star Wars has some amazing books too though. Its not all just about the money and the merchandising – I grew up in the Star Wars Expanded Universe and it was just as fulfilling as growing up in the magical world.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=673982809 Irfon Pennant Williams

It’s Star Wars. OK, currently, it has not made more than Harry Potter, true. But I’d bet each film of the next trilogy will easily make a billion. Add the spin off films. it can do more than potter easily. The biggest problem with doing gross is inflation. While HP has made more money, how many tickets has it sold. If I sold 7 cats for 1,000 I’d make more money than the guy who sold 10 for 50.

  • SH

The first two Star Wars were great. After that….. not so much. I actually cannot believe how anyone liked the last 3. But with HP some films were better than others but they were all solid. Just like the kids the movies and the books “grew up” Harry Potter wins. (But Empire Strikes Back will always be in my top ten)

  • http://twitter.com/notenoughpuff Sarah

    Two words: Wizard Rock

  • Matt

I think mainly due to time and popularity, Star Wars. Maybe it’ll be better to ask this question again in something like ten, maybe even twenty years time. For all we know, either of them might have either a significantly bigger or smaller fan-base popularity by then. Especially with the matter of all these new Star Wars films coming out, complicating things. Plus, we don’t know for certain as to whether there will or will not be any more screen adaptations, or further books of the Harry Potter franchise.

  • http://www.facebook.com/katgiambruno Kat Giambruno

Star Wars has built up a bigger fan base over the years, but it is quite a bit older. Still, with the comics, novels and tv shows spawned by Star Wars it is safe to say it has a more massive cannon than Harry Potter. And Star Wars also wins in the merchandise battle. So I think that it is safe to say that until there is an Angry Birds Hogwarts edition that Star Wars wins.

  • davidtennettisawesome

Harry Potter (though both are awesome)

  • Glaciusx

Star Wars has been around way longer than Harry Potter but fandom wise, I would have to say Harry Potter is the victor.

  • Mrs_Badcrumble

They are 2 different beasts. Yes, they are movie franchises, but Potter has the literary aspect behind that can’t be compared to Star Wars. Most of what was stated in “cultural impact” for Potter came from the books, not necessarily the movies.

But if we are discussing the movie franchise alone, then Star Wars wins by miles. 30+ years later we still see Darth Vader and Yoda everywhere! Their voices are used for Tomtom, their faces in credit cards… Potter was (and is?) a great cinematic phenomenon, but it is already fading in the mind of most movie-goers – fans not included of course! – but Star Wars seems to be eternal. Potter is eternal, no doubt, but more in the minds of those who love the movies (and again, the books) than the average joe.

  • Hannah D

Oh wow. I love Harry Potter and Star Wars. They are in my top five favorite franchises. (For me, that’s saying a lot.) However, I am biased toward HP. I grew up reading the books, watching the movies, begging for the merchandise. It inspired a generation, and millions fell in love with it. I am not saying SWs wasn’t amazing, or inspiring, or loved. It is, I know. It is huge. They were both hugely successful. However, if you go up to a teenager, and ask them if they prefer Star Wars or Harry Potter, most would say HP. Star Wars appeals to a specific demographic (arguably), while Harry appeals to almost everyone. Magic and adventure and love. Harry is newer, more modern, so they appeal more to the younger generations. SW took some wrong turns (I think). Jar Jar isn’t comic relief, he’s just stupid and annoying and pointless. Jabba is just gross, in so many ways. There are some characters you just have to dislike.
Harry… I even felt sorry for Voldy and Bellatrix! The characters were very memorable and more real, I thought.
Woah… Sorry, I got a little off topic. I guess I am trying to say… I prefer Harry, because the characters are more real and relateable and make a lasting impression.
That’s my very biased opinion. Harry and Star Wars are awesome! Goodbye. Not that anyone read this, just…

  • PotterFan1029

Well, I’ve never been a Star Wars fan at all, and Harry Potter is my life, so no contest for me: HARRY POTTER. *thunder*

  • Meg

Both are really good. However I think it’s a choice of which you were introduced to earlier. Most of the potter-generation, would probably say Potter, however most people born before then would say Star Wars. Also I think a triumph of Star Wars it was cinematically groundbreaking, and it’s been around for a lot longer.
However it should not be forgotten that Harry Potter influenced a generation to read instead of just watching TV, at a time, where there weren’t many readers. It also helped the creation of Podcasts, and gave power to the fan sites.

So who do I think is bigger? Neither, they are equal. They helped shape the world and culture around us. The only true test is the mistress TIME. Which is most likely to be studied in schools in 2313?

  • DoyleHolmesFan

Star Wars. This is completely subjective though and more than likely this site’s demographic will lean towards Potter. I don’t mean that in a bad way at all but most of the people that frequent this site probably were right around the age that Jo wrote the books for and eventually the movies were created for.
